I am currently a second year arts major, and I was wondering if picking up a minor in biology or public health would be helpful for my medical school application? Or would it be better to double major?

The major does not matter. Take your intro bio series, Your intro physics series, your intro chemistry series, the organic chemistry series, upper division biochemistry. That will likely work out to getting you a couple classes short of a major but you’ll definitely have a minor already by completing the pre-Rex. But again your major and minor do not matter

Thank you for replying! I don't think the premed reqs are enough for any minors at my school and I would have to take additional upper div courses. Do you think taking a few additional courses such as genetics, molecular bio, physiology etc in order to get a minor in biology would be a good idea? And how helpful would these courses be for the mcat?

I don’t know about for the minor, but if you can take Cell biology and Physiology before MCAT it would be a good idea.

Major in anything you want. Take the premed prerequisites which will include bio, chem, org chem, physics, and biochem (for MCATS) and investigate the math and English requirements for the medical schools to which you will want to apply. You may also want to take some intro sociology and psychology for MCATs (and life) as well, though this is not necessary if you do adequate MCAT prep. Some schools will want 2 semesters of organic chem, so keep that in mind as well.

Do not worry about a double major OR a minor. "Premed" should not be a major or a minor at an undergraduate school. It is a set of requirements established by medical schools, not a sufficient body of knowledge that it should represent anything to an undergraduate institution.

It’s not going to make you any more appealing to med school to have a bio or public health minor or second major. Doing well, especially in prereqs and reccomeneded classes will do you a lot more good.
