As a MI resident, am I stupid if I don't go to MSUCOM?

The tuition for in-staters is great, the school seems to have a good rep, but at this point I still feel like shopping around, namely at CCOM, PCOM, UMDNJ, UNECOM, and NYCOM.

I just feel like there are probably a lot of out of state people who would love to be a MI resident to take advantage of the tuition there.

You would be a fool to not look around. Med school is going to be the foundation upon which all of your future medical knowledge. To pick a default school based solely upon your location would be foolish, even if that location allows for low tuition. Make an educated decision.

That said, as a MI resident your low tuition IS a huge bonus and you would be equally foolish to ignore that arbitrarily. Debt after med school is a tremendous burden...cutting the average burden in half or even by 1/3 is a tremendous financial relief.

I agree with DR. MAX. You should spread your wings a bit. Even though the Mich. is an awesome med school, you should give yourself a chance at other places aswell......

Hi jason3278,

I too am from michigan and I got into MSU-COM once upon a time. I chose to go elsewhere and I have no regrets. Would things have turned out any differently had I gone to MSU-COM? That I'll never know for sure. I just thought another school was a better fit for me. Consider your options and take everything into account. Remember that's it's difficult to make a bad decision about where to attend med. school.

check em all out and if its a tie w/ MSU and somewhere else...always go w/ the cheaper option w/ all else being relatively equal

VALSALVA - did you end up going to the caribbean?

If I were in your place, I would accept MSU in a frikkin' heartbeat.

I'm in the same boat as you, Mi resident and current MSU student considering MSU, CCOM, Touro - NV, and others .... I guess it all comes down to where you want to practice too ... correct me if I'm wrong, but if you want to practice in Mi won't your chances of landing a residency/etc increase if you go to MSU ? The tuition is great for instate, especially for the quality of education, and I know if they didn't favor in state students so much there would be a greater interest in the school, esp. on sdn.

I would suggest like what the others have mentioned, make sure to keep your options open, visit each place, and goodluck

Good advice, thank you everyone.

The OP's question is a good one, but unfortunately he is asking a bunch of caterpillars what it feels like to fly.

I'm from michigan and I was accepted at MSU COM and MSUCHM, but after interviewing and receiving acceptances from other schools I really felt more at home at KCOM. And this was after I had thought MSUCOM was my first choice. I love it at KCOM and glad I went with my gut feeling and not just based on tuition. Good luck wherever you choose!

you could always take advantage of in state tuition at UMDNJ!
