Just wondering, as a resident, what patient base are you seeing and doing surgeries on? Is it usually only people on state insurance? Do private doctors with private patients (I'm assuming these are the PPO employer insurance coverage) ever let residents practice on their patients, or even do surgery?

The VA hospital system is the goldmine for surgeries at the program I matched at ---

I don't think I ever did a Medicare or private insurance patient during residency. They were county insurance and VA patients and perhaps some Medicaid. It makes more sense for private insurance patients to be done by attendings as they can actually bill for the procedure and make money for the department. Can't do that as a resident. I suppose some attendings may hand those cases over to residents, but I doubt that would be very often at all.
