what are the chances of an attending landing a job in a specific city. IE, I understand you have more flexibility in the midwest than east/west coast, but what if you were limited to needing to practice in a specific city for family reasons, not just a specific area.

IE, would you be hard pressed to find a job in Lexington KY, but easier time finding it within a 1-2 hour radius of it, or are there enough jobs available in almost all cities that as an attending you'd have an easy time finding jobs anywhere in the country?

I understand also that there is a lot of variability between states, just looking for broad generalizations.

Your chances are very good if you're not picky.

My impression is that most academic programs are hiring in perpetuity. So Louisville should be an easy market.

For private practice, if you're willing to take an employed position at slightly sub-market rates, I think in most years and most markets you can get a job anywhere you want.

If you want a well-compensated partnership track private practice job in a desirable hospital, that's a different issue.

depends on the year really and the city you are speaking of. for example the twin cities is in a glut of anesthesiolgist and crnas for that matter. hard to find a job there because nobody is leaving. lexington ky as well. unless you wanna take a job at the university. all the private jobs are accounted for. thats why you never see ads for them. In general, the markets that are less desirable you will find jobs in. what holds you back in looking for jobs is the following.. if you have kids or a wife who wanna be some where.. makes you picky and you have to accept certain conditions.
