Hey all,

I was filling out the coursework section on the application, and I was just curious how many people are applying without biochemistry?

I'm planning on submitting my application within the next week, but I still have some pre-requisite courses that I haven't taken yet.

I am currently taking Ochem lab, haven't taken biochemistry, anatomy and physiology.

I know the latter two aren't pre-requisites at a lot of the schools, but does not having ochem lab and biochemistry grades available hurt the chances of my application?

I am definitely planning on taking all biochemistry, anatomy and physiology in the fall and spring.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I have biochem but no lab, some school requires 4 credits of biochem but I only have 3, I wonder how that's gonna affect me. Can someone shed some light on these issues?

I'm reading through the ADEA Guide for this year, and it says 3 units of biochem if semester, and 4 units if quarter. This is for majority of the schools, so i guess it depends if your 3 units is from a semester system or quarter system.

The BCH thing is usually cleared up easily if it even needs to be. I'm not sure anyone requires the lab which leaves a lot is applicants with a 3 credit lecture.

As long as it appears you are well on your way to completing pre-requisites, it shouldn't have much of an effect. Decent science scores help too. If you only had BIO I completed and no planned courses and a 15TS, they'd laugh and move on. I think I still had A&P II, micro w/ lab and biochm left to complete when I applied. All required.

Which schools require 4 credits of Biochemistry?

I am pretty certain that the majority of schools only require 3 semester hours. To answer the original posters question, not having biochemistry on your initial application will NOT put you at a disadvantage. As long as you will be able to fulfill the requirement before you matriculate, you will get interviews and have the same chance as someone that has already taken biochem.

The only reason it MAY have an effect is if you haven't taken some other upper division science courses. It puts a little uncertainty on your ability to succeed in harder classes--like those you will take in d-school. But if you have some upper div classes, you shouldn't be too worried.

what if you've only taken one upper division course and will be finishing the remainder in the fall. And do they have to biology upper division courses, is it possible to courses in environmental science/psychology with a biology part to it? I want to show the adcoms I can handle the upper division course work but I am worried it will be a case of too little too late

More upper divisions is optimal and suggested, but not required. You can't really do anything about it now; it's certainly not something that should keep you from applying...unless you REALLY have something to prove...like if you have a 2.8 taking 9 credits per semester.

Also under the coursework sections where you input your CREDITS, this is the # of SEMESTER units correct?

For example, my ochem class was 3 units and ochem lab was 1 unit. For the lecture, i would input 3 credits.

And anything that is on a quarter system would have to be converted to semester?

To answer the OP's question, I'll be applying with 1 year of biochemistry under my belt (biochem major). However, I don't its really necessary. Just hope for the best 🙂
