My new fiscal year resolution is that each month when I pay my mortgage, I'm going to send set amount of funds to my state component society and to the ASAPAC....

With all the bills that I have to pay, this seems like a small amount..

Perhaps a good strategy for many of the board readers?

I recently (re)discovered that ASAPAC can rebill your credit card each month for a donation. It's what I do now ... no opportunity to forget or put it off. I don't even notice it anymore, it just automatically happens.

I'm not giving anything to my state component at the moment. I should.

Well, considering that right now my take-home pay (in 24/yr installments) currently, after taxes, is about $6,500 every couple of weeks, sort of seems like a small pittance to pay to help protect my future, doesn't it?

Don't get me wrong, I will donate. But I'm a little ticked off they think we have a shortage going on here. I believe we need to cut our numbers in training.

asapac needs a voice first....then guys prodoc...who have connections can start to voice opinions.

Maybe I misread Mil's post, but I don't see any bullying. He simply stated what HE was doing to help give anesthesiologists a voice. If anything, he was wondering if it might be something others concerned with the current state of affairs may want to do too.

Mil has put his money where his mouth is. Based on my nosing around, I see he has given $1000+ a year toward ASAPAC for the past few years. He is not a johnny-come-lately to the ASAPAC.

While ASAPAC may be trying to perpetuate their own existence, you fail to recognize that anesthesiology's existence is tied to that too.

Just by making a thread about it constitutes bullying. Just by alluding to the fact that if one does not contribute the specailty is doomed forever which just aint the case. If someone wants to believe you thats fine, but I dont believe you. I have cautious pessimism in everything ASA.

I hate to disgree with you buddy. Powerful entities including big pharma, Boeing, AHA, teachers' unions, etc, etc, etc donate to PACs. I am sure these institutions have proven their worth many times over in their respective fields and yet they still donate. Why? Because they want to ensure everyone else including politicians appreciate their worth.

Only relying on being good at what you do used to be good but no longer. The competition is ensuring your skills and training are overshadowed with smart politicking and underhanded tactics that will ensure you end up like a glorified CRNA. We all know you have better training and skills than the nurses.

The question is: do those who control your salary and reimbursements know it? That's the ultimate goal and the way we do that is by donating to the ASAPAC and making sure the politicians know your worth.

I know you're a big proponent of AAs. Would you donate if your donations will help further this cause?

It makes me sick that this specialty is full of bright young doctors who are too POLITICALLY STUPID to help protect their OWN FUTURE. It only takes a stroke of a pen by some ******* politician i.e. CALIFORNIA OPT-OUT.

Well, it is my understanding (correct me if I am wrong) that a decent proportion of anesthesiologists in the U.S. are not members of the ASA to begin with, which would make it difficult to mandate donation to an "ASA" PAC. I do think there is benefit to having donations hinge upon performance, which would not be the case if donation was mandatory.

Question: Is it possible to donate to the ASA PAC without being a member of the ASA? I do not think that most attending anesthesiologists that are not ASA members would necessarily be a prime target for PAC donation, but do they have that option?

Also, thanks for the info on monthly credit card charging for the donations... that's a decent way to go about it. Already do that with Netflix, could do it with ASA PAC (for a lowly medical student, I believe the values would be pretty close to each other, though that will hopefully change when attending status is attained). 🙂

We won't ever capture all anesthesiologists. I think it would be a great step to capture all members of the ASA. It could even be a different level for attendings v. residents v. med students. At the resident level, I would be happy to make my ASAPAC donation part of my ASA dues, because then it would be reimbursable from my department.

Although I wonder if a mandatory donation of x amount would deter some of the more generous donors from their current levels.
