I've searched a bit and couldn't find a great answer. Aside from class rank and test score, I realize having anything else on your CV is better than nothing, but is being a part of ASDA leadership, or even the school leadership any better than just getting a lot of experience with the oral surgery department and being active in clubs? We have elections coming up and I'm not sure if running for a position is worth my time or not. I'm not especially interested in ASDA or student government, but I will jump through the hoop if required.

Do it if you want to do it. I hate playing the game where you gotta check the boxes, but it makes it easier to check them if you’re genuinely interested in them.

I was not involved in any form of student government or even been a class rep, and it was not a barrier for me to get accepted.

Although, I wasn’t sitting around doing nothing during my my spare time. I volunteered as a motivational speaker for underserved children, volunteered at the special olympics, did mission trips internationally and within the US, tutored dental basic sciences etc.

I feel they didn't care about that stuff. If it hurts your rank or cbse- don't so it!

Cbse and rank are no. 1. Then, do a fair number of externships and get a few solid letters. Then you'll be straight.

Involvement in the omfs club will probably be more valuable in getting to know the omfs faculty for said letters than being able to include "club involvement" on your cv.

waste of time if youre just doing it for OMS, because no one cares. It's like eagle scout -- if the guy did student govt maybe he'll give a ****, but its more of a talking point, it's not really of value beyond that. If the interviewer didn't---he won't care, at all.

And yes, no one actually gives a **** about eagle scouts.

For love of God, just to what you like to do and are interested in.
Don't bs anything for resume

What!?!? This just goes against everything my formal education has groomed me for lol...so happy you said this though. Out of curiosity, are you in an OMS residency right now? In the process of applying? What did your ec's look like?

I appreciate all the responses!

It has become abundantly clear that CBSE is about the most important thing in the world for a lot of these programs.

So just kill CBSE, and do whatever you want.

I did ASDA. Enjoyed it enough. Did some nice things for my classmates, I feel. Got some fun trips out of it. Don’t know if it helped my application but it certainly didn’t hurt it. As long as it doesn’t come at the expense of your grades, test scores, go for it. Get some of your friends to do it too. I probably wouldn’t have been able to put up with the “ASDA Fever” without them.

Is this for both 4- and 6-year programs? I'm following up on some comments by a few people in the 2017 OMS Match thread, where they mentioned many cases of people with low 60s or lower matching..
