Ask a graduate of U of Cincinnati's M.S. in Physiology program (SMP) anything!

In writing the application, where do you indicate past work experience and activities done post college since I have been off for more than a year. Also, do you recommend entering information in bullet short sentences or paragraph essay format. Not so sure.

It's been so long and the application may have changed, so I unfortunately can't tell you where exactly you can put that info, but I assure you there's a place somewhere to stick it in, because I was in the same boat...worked 2 years after graduating, volunteered in an ER, etc, and I put all that on there. I recommend bullet format for listing activities, but depending on what it is, you may need to elaborate, which you should do in paragraph form.

Question about letters of recommendation. I know they have their own form and manner of handling them, but they say you can use ones from interfolio and such as an alternative. I am applying to med school right now and I have letters of rec that are pretty good already and I hate to ask and wait on my letter writers to write updated letters using UC's own form. do you think its fine to send the already made letters? I may be thinking too much into this, but I don't want them to think I didn't spend too much on my app because I actually did and i really want to attend UC.

You can double check with them if you wish, but using Interfolio should be just fine. I believe those forms are to give your letter writers if you're getting new letters and don't already use a service like Interfolio. I think I used Interfolio when I applied too...shouldn't be a problem.

I wouldn't fret too much about the letters. I used Interfolio across the board, and applied with the same letters that I used for med school that application cycle. As for timing, I applied in Feb. and was accepted 3 weeks later in Mar.

And, to give you some more hope, many of the current MS students interviewed in Jan., and several of us were just accepted including myself.

If you are accepted, just get ready to work hard! Feel free to PM Pedsbro or I if you have anymore Q's.

hey Pedsbro! thanks for answering our questions. 🙂 i'll most likely be starting at UC in the fall, but i'm curious if you know how smp-ers handle the application process if we're submitting the amcas before starting the smp. should we mention on the primary app that we're going to attend an smp? and if so, where on the app? or is this done with just updates in the secondary app? i tried searching for some detailed advice about this, but could't find any... :\

oh! and i'm from the cali UC system too! fun stuff haha

Well since you're already accepted to the program and assuming you plan on attending, the coursework should be entered as "Current/Future" graduate coursework on AMCAS. As for mentioning the program to schools you applied to, there are a couple ways you can do it. I frankly believe that your last resort is putting it in the personal statement if you have not completed the program yet. Your PS has too little real estate to say "hey BTW, i'm doing this program and I don't know how I'll do but I hope to do well, etc." Saying what you're going to do is far less important as saying what you've done, which is why I would definitely put it in the PS if you had just completed the program (as I did myself, since I waited to apply after the SMP). But just not before you start.. Just my opinion, but it wouldn't be my first choice. Putting it in AMCAS (other than the coursework section) is hard, because you have no place to explain that this is an SMP and not a regular 2-year science masters. However, many schools (though not all) may recognize it.. Your best bets are putting it in a secondary application, or simply sending a letter or email to the admissions committee or Dean of admissions at any school you apply to and in the letter, explain the SMP, why you feel you need to do it, and most importantly, request this letter/email to be part of your application file! This is not an uncommon thing to ask, so I'd be shocked if you receive significant resistance from the schools on this (although in this damn admissions process, you just never know haha). So I would explain in a secondary if there's space to, and if not, send a letter/email. Someone mentioned having Dr. Banks write one...I don't think that's appropriate for a letter of intent to start the SMP. Use his letters for updates AFTER you've started the SMP, such as after your first and second exam weeks...his letters not only state how well you're doing, but also talks about what the program is...killing two birds with one stone. Lots of options, some might be better than others, but the bottom line is that you need to tell the schools that you're in this program, describe (briefly) the program, and notify them to expect update letters regarding your progress. Good luck and let me know if I can answer any more questions! You'll thoroughly enjoy the program and you're coming in at a good time (before the major curriculum change coming to UCCOM).

P.S. I don't check this as often as I used to, especially during the summer, so bear with me...

Pedsbro, I'm interested in applying to SMP's this December. Do you think I'm competitive for the MS at UCinci, with a 3.31 cGPA, 3.131 sGPA, and a 32P MCAT?

And earlier in the thread, you advised someone to wait until completion of the SMP with a 3.2 GPA. Do you think it's advisable for me to apply during the SMP with a 3.3?

Thanks for starting this thread, and providing a lot of info about this program.👍

I would say you are competitive and I would definitely give it a shot and apply for the SMP. If you get in, it's a little iffy when it comes to applying while in the program. 3.3 cumulative and especially that 3.13 sciGPA is on the low side as you know. My own arbitrary cutoff is having a 3.5 to apply while in the program...so I personally would wait. But realize there is much more to consider...what would you do in that gap year, are you willing to wait longer (I don't know how old you are or what your personal/family life is like), and your overall gut feeling about your chances. For now, take one thing at a time and try to get in the program...the latter decision is irrelevant until you get in. But I would definitely apply to the UC SMP, as well as others as a backup. Good luck!👍
