Thank you,
Ya that is what i would assume. I've been hearing that it's definitely not pleasant living there apart from attending medical school. What I mean is as a med student i would be so pre-occuppied with school / studying that the short amount of spare time i would have still allows me to do basic activities such as going to a movie, going to dinner, recreation activities etc. (med students don't have the time to be bored in the midwest essentially)

How much of that is true?

Well I don't think that's true necessarily but it's not like there's nothing to do in the Midwest; there are cities here, such as Chicago, haha. I had a lot of fun in med school and you have more spare time than you'd think.

I think his fear stems from the somewhat new regurgitation around here to not pick a school based on it's surrounding night/day life, because as a med student you won't have enough time to enjoy it. I swear everyone just started saying this in the past two months or so and now all the pre-meds are reciting it as fact whenever the topic comes up. Oh well.

As i mentioned, its what i've heard. Im wondering how much of truth and how much is hyperbolic talk. It would be great for some feedback from med students.
Fivo, whats your input on this?

While you may not be able to go out every single night, you also should be able to do fun stuff around where you live at least once a week if not multiple times a week. Most cities in the Midwest offer you a chance to do that, but don't expect NY/LA/Chicago level of available activities.

I didn't think so. I never went to class and just read through our handouts once and annotated FA and Goljan. Sometimes bits of trivia come out during pimping or smth but boy often.

What were your numbers? GPA, Step 1, Step 2?

Theres plenty of free time in medical school. You will figure out how to prioritize your day and week, and will subsequently be able to enjoy all the things in life that you like to do. Quit thinking that you'll be buried int he library from 6am to midnight as that isn't how medical school is or how it should be. You can do very well and still have some balance in your life. The exception here is your medicine and surgery clerkships. Those often take a lot of time and have overnight call as well.

I'm a fourth year and I feel like I could have enjoyed all that Chicago, Boston, NY, etc has to offer over the past 4 years.

Thanks Lanolin,

Working out / training. Dinner and a movie with friends / gf is more than sufficient for me. Thats my free time now. If i could do those things regularly in the midwest i would be content

Differs for everyone.

I could have gone to school in NY, DC or Boston, and STILL would never go to Broadway shows, or museums, or all that stuff those cities offer. I live in the Midwest now and my time is divided between school, the hospital and bars, just like what would have happened if I had gone to school on the coast (except here everything is way cheaper).

If you are one of those people who NEED that culture, some cities may not be for you. Luckily, I am not one of those people.

It is probably because we aren't into anatomy yet, but I've been able to go out 2-3 times a week no problem (and some people go out even more).

The Midwest also has gyms, restaurants, and movie theaters. You may have to relocate your gf and friends though (or make new ones 😎).

Haha when i say gf i really mean future wife and mother of my children. She is also applying next cycle. Were hoping to matriculate together at the same or nearby schools.:xf:

I went out 2-3x a week in med school and worked out 3-4x a week.

Heh, I think that'd be more controversial than productive 🙂

However, I do think this thread is lacking in visual aids, sunny day 🙂

How do we know that's you? Can we get a picture with the watch on your head?

Medical device, both consulting and working with start ups.

Do you mean consulting for start-ups or working on your own? Do you have the time as a specialized physician?

As someone who specializes in medical knowledge, would you understand how to design medical devices and marketing/selling?

Mostly recruiting researchers and financing startups. I've been involved in quite a few startups.

If you were a douche, what brand would you be?

you might've already answered this, but about how long were u out of undergrad before starting med school?

If you could do it again, would you go straight to med school out of undergrad? or do you think spending that time making bank first was better?

A few years. I wouldn't change anything.

I was afraid you'd say that. I'd been kinda wondering lately if maybe I shoulda gone into finance to make some money first myself and be a little more stable in that regard. Always been a really good test taker and great at math and stats, so I think I could done well there. I actually read up a bit on private equity and it actually seemed interesting (maybe at this point that seems crazy to you). Oh well, too late now.

I can't answer for him, but in general, evals are not what make your grade in the clinical years. Your exams nearly always trump everything else. He's obviously a very good test-taker: that alone should do it.

Not necessarily. My schools clinical grades are almost entirely based in evals with the shelf being, more or less, P/F.

Sorry if this has been asked...

Drizzt, people often say that those starting work in IB or other finance related fields are often worked like dogs (long hours, decent pay but lots more work and stress, etc). How would you compare that workload to your workload as a resident?

IB is much harder work than anything I've done in medicine (or likely anyone else since after the 80 hr wk week was instituted). I spent entire weeks in the office w/o going home near a deadline before.

I didn't see this asked. How many pubs do you have? When did you start doing research in medical school?

I ask because I am in my second 'gap' year and I have been working in a research lab that whole time. The work is always very long and time-consuming (lots of counting cells positive for xxxx marker), and so far has only led to two pubs. How the hell do you find time to balance that between the other demands of being a medical student?

A lot of pubs (> 20) and I started as a m1. It's all about time management. My research was all clinical/translational though.

Hey drizzt, I got a few questions for you:
  1. What do you think of this getup for interviews?
    • Double Breasted Peak Lapel Blazer in Navy Blue
    • Window Pane English spread collar shirt with side vents & darts
    • Charcoal Grey flat front trousers
    • Glen Plaid socks or Grey striped socks
    • Wholecut plain toe balmorals
    • Rep Stripe Tie
    • Leather Band Watch (think IWC)
    • Bracelet of Beads (probably tiger's eye)
    • Lapel Flower
    • Plain/Bordered/Glen Plaid/Gingham pocket square
  2. With a dress shirt, do I want with or without a front pocket?
  3. What are some wholecut balmorals I can get for under $200?
  4. What are some leather watches I could find for under $100?
  5. Fragrances, what do you recommend?
  6. What are some books you're currently reading?

  1. Sounds awesome if you want to be a caricature.

Doesn't matter but I prefer w/o. I'm not the person to ask about finding cheap stuff. Creed Green Irish Tweed or Original Vetiver. Have a few books I'm starting soon.

GIT, that's a nice one. I'm more partial to SMW.
I guess I will drop the double breast for a single breast, no pocket square, no flower, no accessories.

Oh and drizzt, are you a poker playing internet bigtimer? Even if you are not, do you get the reference?

Yo that is not funny...that is not even funny yo.

Have you seen the preview for the honey boo boo episode?

Did you even lift?

Can you describe what you do in IB? I have the general picture of what it is but I've wondered what people do there that takes so much time.

Did your thighs get smaller?

Not really. I'm lucky that I don't have to lift that much to maintain good muscle mass. I try to go 3-4x so when possible tho.
