Lots of excel.

I heard this from my friend who is in it but I thought it was a slightly tongue-in-cheek joke. Then again, I also heard that the ranks get culled often and that once you're out, you have relatively few marketable skills.

I would say most people land on their feet... After all, they're recruiting the best of the best.

Haven't done maxes in a long time, but 3-400 for reps in DL/squat and bench depending on reps 225-275.

yo, that is fairly respectable--I ain't even gonna hate the fact that you even do lift weights!

It's ok, I don't go for big weight as much now bc my days are too busy for good recovery, but I try to keep in shape.

400 lb squat for reps is insane. I rarely ever see anybody go that high in my gym.

Yeah I'd say my usual routine is like 8 reps of squat/DL with 335 or so, but occasionally I'll put up 3-5 reps with 4 plates to mix it up.

I routinely get strange looks from guys 1.5 x bigger than me when I'm pulling 425-455lbs on deadlifts and they're repping 225.

Deadlifts are probably the lift for which people underperform the most.

Sorry, back to your regular scheduled programming.

Nice, I did legs for the first time since spraining my ankle two months ago, threw up 375 x 8, felt good!

As a radiologist do you deal at all with the quantitative imaging equations of modalities like CT or do you just know qualitative stuff?

Refrain from judging these poor souls! When I was fat and bulking I was doing 365 for 2-3 reps. Now I'm cutting and can't handle strength training at all, so I'm doing 225 for high reps (easy to recover from). I'm always kind of embarrassed from the low weight but it is what it is...

What are you cutting for? It's october...

Drizzt, what was your lifting routine and diet? How often would you make weight progressions?

I'm 5'9", 165-170lbs and I have 18-20% bf.

I'm slow/clean bulking, my goals are:
Bench 165/205
Squat 195/255
Deadlift 225/300

After 300, I run out of free weights so my goals are a bit low but then again my current strength is fairly low relative to my height/weight.

Dude, my advice is to cut to low bf (8%) and then slowly cycle up your calories to bulk up. This helps to raise your metabolism and makes it alot easier to gain mass and strength without fat. Not only that, you'll feel alot better at a low bf. I know your broscience alarm is probably going off, but if you trust me you'll probably be alot happier for it.

I tried that approach, I cut down but I didn't have enough muscle...i just became a smaller version of myself--not a cut version.

You didn't cut right. If you do it effectively you can gain strength while cutting (atleast until rly low bfs). I'm doing a 40p/35f/25c macrobreakdown with a 400 cal deficit.

Drizzt, how much you weigh?

5'10, 160 (9% body fat) here--never been able to squat past 295 lbs. Max I've done is 285 lbs for 2 reps. What do you suggest for getting to 320-340 range in squats?

bench (1 rep max 250-ish) and deadlift (375-405 lbs, depending on the day) are pretty ok. Power clean and press are at 155 for 3 reps. I do all these while running 4 miles weekly.

Box squats?

Because I was like 22% bf lol. I wanna get down to 8% and then I can hopefully bulk and stay lean. Right now I'm at like 13 or 14%, excited to get abs soon.

I prefer to bulk in the fall/winter and cut after the new year. I stay in the mid 10s after the after summer and cut after that. I find it hard to put on muscle w/o sufficient calories and prefer bulk/cut cycles.

I lift 4x week, chest, legs, arms, shoulders/back with core every day. I do chest: incline db/bb (don't do flat bench/fly bc of arm/shoulder injury), incline fly, 5x5, arms: standing/preacher db/bb curl 5x5, skulls/overhead db 5x5 + ropes, leg: squat/dl 5x5, shoulder: db/bb military, db/bb shrug, rows/cleans 5x5.

maybe...but winter is coming and i'd rather slow bulk and then cut the fat off quickly.
i'll have to try a different approach this time around...maybe more cardio?

6' 1" 215 right now. Your #s are good given your body weight. You'll have to put on more mass to lift more. 4 whole miles a week? Don't wear yourself out. 😉

That's understandable.

Cardio isn't the answer for cutting. Abs are made in the kitchen. Go to ironaddicts.com and start researching how to cut properly for when you do cut, it will help alot.

Yeah I generally agree although HIIT is good for cutting.

Do you think it's possible for a surgery resident to fit in time for the gym 3-4x a week?

Probably not in all months. I've never worked 80 hours a week in residency and some weeks it's harder to lift more than 2x (although my gym does have weird hours) so I think a surgery resident working 80-100 hours a week would have a hard time if they wanted to get decent sleep.

I think this is the beauty of compound lifts, especially when time is limiting. You get a lot done in less time while still having time for other accessory resistance training (calves, barbell rows, weighted dips and pull ups, core etc)

How long should it take to put 15lbs lean muscle onto a 6'1" frame, assuming you're eating right and lifting 4x/wk?

What would've been your second choice specialty if you ended up hating Rads?

Intelligence: are you born with it or do you earn it?

In 2012, Dartmouth SOM was renamed Geisel SOM after creator of "Dr. Seuss"... Why does this school insist on being the red-headed stepchild of the ivy professional schools?

How long before Penn State recovers from the NCAA sanctions? UW will be sh:tting on them for yrs to come (this year being the only possible exception).

Not really for drizzt but for anyone in general:

How do you guys know how to eat right? I've been wondering for a while. I'm a tall, thin fellow (over 6'3" ~185lbs) and I just can't put on weight because I think I don't eat enough/right. Also, I'm assuming that some of you are still in undergrad. So, how do you manage to eat right on a college kid budget?

I used to be skinny. 120 lbs at just under 5'10. I added 20 lbs of lean muscle over 3 months (no steroids, just eating a lot and taking 20 g of protein powder as supplement everyday). I eventually bulked to 175 lbs in under 6 months while still maintaining my six pack. This was back in the late stages of college and starting grad school. I cut back to 160 lbs by just cutting caloric intake.

Diet:

1) Eat lots of complex carbs (rice, pasta, sphaghetti).

2) Eat lots of protein (peas, chicken). Avoid too much red meat (beef) because of cholesterol. Drink milk.

3) Eat some healthy fats.

4) Get Martin potato wheat bread (each slice contains 6 g of protein). One pack of bread is under $4.

5) Avoid "feeling" hungry and always make sure you are in the fed state, preferably with healthy foods.

6) Lift heavy and focus on compound lifts (squats, deadlifts, bench press, power clean and press). Do other lifts if you have time. Don't forget calves. Depending on your current level of body fat, I would add a commensurate amount of cardio.

It also helps if you cook to lower the cost of food.

Bulking is very doable. Or get a myostatin inhibitor (j/k).

Don't really use the box. I just use the free barbell and squat just below parallel. My form is good. Unless the box will help me get stronger and avoid injuries.

Read the Elite FTS articles on box squatting. It helps with the portion of the lift where I stall (coming out of the hole and initiating hip drive).

You could also try playing around with different squat forms (high bar/low bar).
I used to exclusively do low bar but I've recently switched to high bar; I had to lower the weight but I like the high bar squat form as it allows me to go deeper and I think it works my quads more leaving my hamstrings fresh for deadlifts.

Heh, I think that'd be more controversial than productive 🙂

However, I do think this thread is lacking in visual aids, sunny day 🙂

I don't have a question yet... that's just a really awkward looking forearm/hand to me. It looks bodily disproportionate.

Maybe it's the angle, I don't know.

More than you can imagine.

Do you have enough now to retire if you wanted to?

Or if you don't want to answer that, then how large of a nest egg should physicians aim for to build up in order to retire living the good life?

Depends if you lift already, your body type, muscle mass, etc.

Both, I think you're born with it but it can improve in childhood.

Not sure.

Probably against my self-interest.

You know my hand is on the right, correct?

Not with the lifestyle I want; besides I wouldn't want to. My # would be much higher than others; 9 figures.

Drizzt, are you aware that you come off like a latter-day Patrick Bateman?

It was said in the other thread; honestly I don't care what random people think; everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I'm not murdering anyone, in any case.

let's say you're an ectomorph who increases lifting routine to 4x/wk from once/wk.

Depends on nutrition but my guess is probably 2-3 mo if you wanted to do it clean.

The sanctions themselves are 5 yrs, but they will be probably lose top recruits for ~ decade.

What would've been your 2nd choice specialty?

Prob ortho-sports med.

9 figures as in $100 Million? What the hell do you need that kind of money for?

If you're not going to be working, you need your savings to generate income commensurate with your lifestyle; that might be on the excessive side but interest rates are so low at the moment that you need lots of capital to generate income. Right now a 30 year treasury is at 3%, meaning 100M is only earning 3M a year. Given taxes on that income, you're only taking in probably 1.5M.

True, but I'm assuming since it sounds like you enjoy working, you will be doing so until at least 45-50 and will already have nice house/cars/investments set up. Will you really need 1.5M/year of discretionary spending WITH a 100 M nest egg? The richest man in the graveyard ain't any less dead brother. I would think 25-30 would be enough for a man of your taste.

That's nice, I'm glad you know how much money you think I need... Lol

So you plan to retire in your 50s or so? Personally, I wouldnt want to retire that early.

The sanctions are 4 years. But the effects will likely last a good bit longer.
