I got an 87.54 in my human physiology class, and you need an 88 to get an A- (no significant figures specified, not that it matters). My gpa is really struggling so should I go ask him to round it up? A 3.33 to a 3.67 in that class will make a world of difference. I'd easily have an A, but I missed one lab due to lack of sleep, which I e-mailed him immediately about making up but he said no.

Tips on how to get it done?

"Dear Professor X,

Because you've had the pleasure of having me in your class, I'm expecting you to round up my grade to an A-.

Love,
X"

But in all seriousness, ask him if she rounds up grades. It usually works in an indirect way.

Should I meet in person to look at my final exam first, and see if I can get any points back? I really don't think I should e-mail about this, I need to do it in person
And any personal experiences in this area?

I have asked a professor to round up, but I did it through email as she was more laid back, but your professor seems more stern. I personally wouldn't go through the trouble of looking for points unless you know for certain he doesn't round grades up, do you?

Honestly it seems like it's easier to toss aside an email but harder to reject someone in person

"I'd easily get an A"

Didn't get an A.

No excuses, bud. If you got an 87.54, then you deserve a B+. I guess you can ask, but grade point cutoffs exist for a reason. Why would you be an exception?

Oh, I'm just pursuing any avenue possible that would contribute to my personal benefit. I explained why I lost those points, but I'm not pretending that I have a moral right to that grade or anything.

You'd be surprised. Many professors hate pre-meds because of what you're about to do, so be prepared to get chewed out.
First I'll try and see if there's any points I can get back on my final exam so it'd be legit. Otherwise I'll just ask to round up.

Wouldn't hurt to ask your prof in person, especially if after the class you would never be seeing them again.

It sounds like you've already decided what you're going to do. Do it and let us know how it turns out.

My comment refers to all forms of grade grubbing.
He's given us points back before on tests. He seems somewhat lenient, but after I missed that lab I don't know what his opinion is of me.

I was mainly looking for tips tbh on how to do it

That's never stopped me before

Unless you were born with no knee caps
i'd rather get a B+ than do that tbh
But I'd rather figuratively suck up and get an A- than be stoic and get a B+

Do you want to go to med school or settle for an ARNP? Sometimes we have to make sacrifices for our dreams

This is not usually something that allows for exceptions to the rule. He will probably say that you earned the B+ when you were sleeping through a required lab...

I'm not asking him to give me the grade because I missed the lab
I'm asking because 87.54 mathematically rounds up to 88

I know, I'm saying that he would probably be more likely to help you out if you didn't pull something like this during the semester that has now put you in this spot.

No pun intended right? :crying:

I have no idea what your talking about...

I mean I immediately asked him if I could make it up, and he said no, so it wasn't like I never addressed it
But yeah I get what ur saying tbh

I don't know why the prof is being such an ass when excell would handily do the rounding. Does his syllabus say grades are written out to two decimal places???

Go ahead and ask, the worst he'll do is say "no".

And next time, be more responsible with your sleep time, and showing up at lab when you're supposed to.

His syllabus doesn't say that by any means, but it's vague whether or not he grades on the points system. I have a 481.5/550 but an 88 is 484/550. Mathematically it should round up but I don't know. But his syllabus says an A- is 88, it doesn't say 484.

If the syllabus says >88, then rounding doesn't matter.

Guys are being tough on him. Just go and ask like Goro said. If he doesn't oh well.

I'm pretty sure even if you got a 87.9 you wouldn't get a 88, depending on the class 🙁 That's how most of my classes were, no rounding at all,

Just ask what his general policy is, "do you round .5 up ?" That way it doesnt look like he is doing you some big favor.

Like people said the worst he can say is no.

What if the professor beats him up and takes his lunch money?

Calls for consideration into how straight the straight line is. On the floor with no lunch money is not a bad place to start.

If he rounds, he'll round. If he doesn't, you'll just piss him off.

I think you should go to his office "for learning purposes" to look over your exam to see what you missed/could do better, etc. Then just ask if he rounds. I'd say my classes in undergrad were 70/30 no rounding/rounding. To be fair, most teachers were very clear about it early on if they didn't round. But many teachers said that if you came in and showed interest during office hours and came to class that they would be more inclined to help people on the bubble. So go in with a positive attitude like he doesn't owe you anything, because he doesn't, and hope for the best. It'll be a little awkward to ask if he rounds, but It'll be worth it if you move up that much for asking a question.

This. As long as you aren't a nuisance and show a genuine intellectual interest in a subject, some professors feel more inclined to help you out if you have a borderline grade, especially if they feel passionate about the particular subject being taught. I can say with certainty that I made an A instead of a B in one of my classes for this very reason. Always "suck up" and give your professors a good reason to like you. Even if you do not make an A, you'll find that your professors will be more than happy to give you a good recommendation.

Sometimes, your professor is very firm on grades, and there's just not a whole lot you can do about that.
