Now the rank list is in, and anxiety starts to grip. Is there any prohibition or taboo against me contacting a program and asking in a round about way if they've ranked me highly and/or think I've matched? Would make the next few weeks MUCH more relaxed.

I imagine it could be highly annoying, but what about with a PD who has been my mentor through the process?

I think that's technically a match violation...at least if you ask specifically.

I don't see the harm in sending an email saying, "I Ranking you highly, hope to see you in July" or something to that effect and seeing how they respond.

I am wondering when programs find out with whom they matched. Is it the day before the actual match ceremony?

According to the NRMP website, programs gain access to their "Confidential Roster of Program's Matched Applicants" at 2pm on Thursday. However, they are not allowed to make the list public until 1pm on Match Day.

There's no point.

(1) You'd be skirting a Match violation
(2) If they gave you an answer you didn't like, you'd be even more anxious as Match Day approached
(3) Even if they said "we ranked you highly," you'd still be anxious as Match Day approached
(4) This is even if they say "don't worry, you'll match, guaranteed!"

I remember reading about it when I was checking to see if my "I want to rank you number 1" e mail was allowed or not. I remember it saying somewhere that you cannot contact programs asking how they ranked you, although they can volunteer that info if they want.

Not to mention that you'd probably come across as a little desperate. I'm pretty sure I'd roll my eyes if I was a PD and received that email from you, even if I did rank you to match. Not sure you want to leave people with the impression that you can't even handle waiting three weeks to find out.

This is exactly how I feel. You will look extremely desperate.

Yes, if you do end up matching there, they'll remember you as "The Really Neurotic Intern" and that's not the best way to make a first impression. Maybe it would help your anxiety to try your best to prepare for the worst case scenario so that you're not blindsided if things somehow don't work out, but otherwise try to take comfort in the knowledge that this is an anxiety provoking time for everyone and most people end up happy where they wind up. 🙂

Agreed. If you are lucky, this guy is going to be your boss. You don't want your boss thinking you are immature and impatient before he even gets to work with you. Cool it. Its only a few weeks.
