I have a deposit for a program due very soon, and am waiting to hear back from another school that is equally as high on my list but I won't hear back from them until the deadline for the deposit for school A has passed. How do I go about asking for an extension on my deposit deadline? Is that something that can be done or that is very common for them to accommodate? I'm not sure what I would say because saying "I'd like an extension because I'm waiting to hear back from another school" seems like something they would not be too pleased with. I'd really appreciate any advice, and especially from someone who has done this.

i say if the deposit deadline is two weeks, ask for a another week "to decide". but if its 3 weeks, just pay the deposit in the 3rd week bc w the uncertaintly of when other schools get back to you, all this will probably cause u more stress and then you'll probably still have to make the deposit. I had to make 3 deopsits, my first offered a refund before march 1st, my 2nd i ate 1000$, my 3rd is my true deposit

How much of a deposit are we talking about here? How much debt do you anticipate being in when you graduate?

It seems like it might be best to put down the deposit without trying to bargain. It's buying you a guarantee of an education, and it protects you from the future awkwardness that results when you tell the people who accept you that they are your back-up plan (rarely a winning move in life).

The deposit is $1000 and nonrefundable - so a pretty hefty chunk of change. It's also due in one week so it's approaching extremely quickly and making me more anxious every day. I don't really have $1000 to throw around but it also seems insignificant when compared with the tens of thousands I'll be spending on my DPT degree.

Yeah. A cool grand could buy a lot of other things. It might be easier to cope with if you think about it as purchasing an insurance policy. It's a good idea to have health insurance. But if you pay for it and don't need it, that's not a bad thing.

Putting down the deposit here is a way of insuring your future, regardless of what happens with this other school. You might be throwing money around, but it's not like you're being foolish or irresponsible.

you could always use the "I don't get paid until x/x and my deposit wouldn't make it in time can i have another week. Or say you need just another week to get the money together. never hurts to ask. but if they deny still pay it so you have a spot

I don't think there is harm in asking, but I also don't think you'll get it. I didn't when I asked. If they do give it to you that school is pretty awesome

I asked for an extension on a deposit, and they gave it to me. The worst thing that can happen is that they say no!

I've also asked for a two week extension on a similar $1000 non-refundable deposit (citing financial issues from interviews) and they granted me a three week extension! It really doesn't hurt to try!

I gathered the courage from reading this thread and asked my school for an extension as well. I told the school my honest reason which is I am waiting from my other school which I should hear back in the next 2 weeks. As someone else said, the worst thing they can say is no. I'll report back how it goes.

I called and asked for the extension and they refused (nicely). Guess I'll be paying the deposit!

The school I asked rejected my request for extension, but I found out at the same time I got into one of my top schools! So, suck on that haha.
