Hello.

I am thinking of asking my professor for a LOR sometime this week, but is it too early?

The AMCAS site isn't open, right? so how would I ask my prof for a letter when the site is not open? Would I have to use Interfolio?

WHEN will you guys be asking for LOR?

NOW is the time to ask. Use Interfolio. Then, when the AMCAS opens, ask Interfolio to send a packet to the AAMC.

Do I have to use interfolio to do this? Do you know if AMCAS will accept letters right now,or is it too early?

I've already asked for 3 of mine, asking for the 4th this week. They're being sent to my premed advisor, who will send them on himself.

i see so if our school does not have a premed advisor, I should use interfolio, correct?

Now is a great time to ask. And don't be afraid to send reminders, and give them a "need-by" date that's a bit earlier than you actually need it. Some writers are great about lors, but some will just lag and forget. I had a doc last year end up NOT writing me a letter b/c he just kept forgetting, even after multiple emails and phone calls and broken promises.

The last thing you want is to have your whole application done, but just waiting for that LOR to get in, it'll drive you insane. Especially when you come on SDN and read about all these people getting verified and getting secondaries, and you're still waiting for that LOR.

Different schools use different services. I think most are on the AAMC Letters thing now. Someone else will hopefully know better.

ok so my problem is the volunteer coordinator will be on a maternity leave in 2 weeks, so I have to get a LOR before she leaves. However, the AMCAS site will not be open in 2 weeks...

So my only option is to get my volunteer coordinator to send the LOR to interfolio, and then I ask interfolio to submit it to AMCAS, right?

What other options do I have?

Interfolio is the universal option. Some schools also have a Career Center with a Letter of Rec Filing Service that does the same thing.

Also, do you guys think asking a PI and a post doc in the same lab is a good idea?

Yes, I did this and it worked out fine for me. The PI was also my instructor, so I'm sure the letters were a little different... also the post-doc asked for a cv, so I'm sure that changed focus of the letters.
