Hi,

Since I'm relatively new to this forum (keep on logging in after 3 months) I would be very helpful of some advice. If I give the CBT in September would I jeopardize my chances of getting into any program as I will probably be only applying to 3 places?

Secondly, does anyone know if you can get another OPT after graduating from dental school if you have already used your one year OPT after graduation (after doing MPH?) I mean if I don't get another OPT how could I join a dental practice after graduation? seems risky...

Thirdly, this seems like a stupid question but out of curiosity do dental programs here also require u to do stupid stuff which technicians do back home..I mean I was pathetic in set ups and wirework (paid a technician to do it)..

would really appreciate some advice

Hi salmanali47

To answer your first question I think you can apply to more than 3 schools if you take Part 1 in September....UPenn, UPitt, Temple, BU, NYU, UMich, UDetroit Mercy...plus space based programs in MarquetteU, CreightonU, NOVA and possibly UFlorida at Gainsville.

I don't know answer to your second Q. But my educated guess is that you can get a second OPT as will be pursuing an entirely different program.

The answer to your third Q is yes you have to go through a rigorous pre clinical and clinical training in stupid stuff which technicians do back home i.e. set ups and wirework!!!

Good luck

I thought UPitt needed part 2

Also what is OPT??? 😳

Yes my apologies. Both UPitt and Temple U need Part 2.

OPT stands for Optional Practical Training.

What is Optional Practical Training?

Optional Practical Training (OPT) is temporary employment authorization that gives F-1 students an opportunity to apply knowledge gained in the classroom to a practical work experience off campus. You may use some or all of the available 12 months of practical training during your course of study or save the full twelve months to use after you complete your studies . Authorization for optional practical training is granted by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) – formerly known as the Immigration and Naturalization Service or INS - and can take at least 90 days and frequently up to 120 days to obtain. It is important that you apply for the authorization at the earliest possible date.

What are the Eligibility Requirements for F-1 Optional Practical Training?

To be eligible to apply for optional practical training, you must:

have been in full time student status for at least one full academic year preceding the submission of your OPT application
be maintaining valid F-1 status at the time of the application, and
intend to work in a position directly related to your major field of study.
.................................................................................................
I hope this helps.

Hi rajkang

If you are a dentist from anywhere in the world then you know you are wrong as all dental students, Foreign Trained or US, have to undergo training in labwork both at the preclinical and clinical level during graduation. As a practicing dentist one sends the labwork to technician. salmanali47 has clearly asked if a dentist needs to relearn the labwork during Advanced Standing training.

Thanks,

rahmed

Let me rephrase my question (but of course thanking everyone for the advice) back home lab work was taught very badly and frankly speaking I hated it..I just focussed on the theory and did pretty well..but the point is what exactly do u start from from if u get into a dental school in the U.S..I mean I hope they don't start off with the stupid prosthetic labwork or making a labial bow...why should we do it when the technician does it in the first place...

I just can't picture myself going through that hell again..I hated it..it was so frustrating.. 🙁 🙁

hey salman,
these lab/practical works are a part of the curriculum! each & everybody goes thro' it!no exceptions ,dude!true, technicians do the lab work here, but if u r a practising dentist,u have to instruct the lab-technician how the crown/bridge has 2 b made, the way u / ur patient wants!thus, u have 2 know the lab procedures, how it is done, etc.!!!got it? 😉
