Can anyone enlighten me on which to attend? I am finishing up my AS at a Community College, and I live in Tempe. I have talked to my professor and he says he can get me on some research at ASU, but UA just seems like a more respected school. Any UA/ASU premeds/ms1,2,3,4 here?

I have searched through the threads and have found very little on this.

I'm not from Arizona, but I think attending a school with a medical school is generally a good idea. It'll lead to a plethora of potential EC's and useful connections.

Compared to UA, ASU has more opportunities for global health research- though UACOM has a global health track. That's one difference between the two that I know of.

I'm an ASU premed who got accepted this cycle.

In general, either school will be good for you in terms of getting into medical school. What you should really consider is where you'll have the least amount of debt and where you'll be happiest. Since you're from Tempe, do you really want to stay there for the rest of your college time or do you want to experience living independently in Tucson? It'll probably cost more to move to Tucson and find a place to live--are you okay with the idea of paying more for that?

Other than that, I don't know what it's like at U of A. I can tell you that at ASU, it's easy to get involved in research, and we benefit a lot from having so many hospitals around (in terms of volunteering experience). Prereqs are well taught, as long as you pick your professors, and are easy to get A's in as long as you don't mind the huge class sizes. The honors college is very supportive and has a partnership with Mayo, which I think you'll be able to take advantage of if you're transferring in after your second year.

Ibear thanks a lot! What are some disadvantages of going to ASU? And I actually heard rumor mayo just withdrew there partnership.

I really don't think Mayo is going to withdraw their partnership, as they depend on ASU for their dual degree programs. I'll try to dig up some info for you. EDIT: And... found: http://www.postbulletin.com/news/stories/display.php?id=1469869

Disadvantages? Well, one, you really do get out what you put in at ASU. For some classes, I coasted a lot and got easy A's, but it made for disappointing class experiences. As your prereq classes are going to be very big, you will have to deal with not having that personal touch, working hard to build relationships with your professors, and dealing with absolutely terrible lab groups. You can definitely work around all of this, though.

Other than that... it probably depends heavily on your major/plans/ambitions/etc. Are you going to be in the honors college? That will change your experience. Are you going to be a science major? What kind? That will decide some of the opportunities available to you as well as some of the hoops you will, unfortunately, have to jump through.

This is interesting because I am in your same predicament, although I am going to a CC in Tucson and plan to go to the UofA...

I went to ASU and am now an MS 3 (not in AZ). I enjoyed my experiences there. Many of the pre-reqs were very well taught (e.g. Dr. Gould for ochem). Personally, I don't really think it matters which school you choose. Go to the one that you prefer. Would you like to live in Tucson or Tempe? UA is more known academically, but I don't think it really matters. As for research, there are tons of opportunities at ASU if you are still searching around. Also, being a UA alumni does not seem to increase your chance of getting into their med school.

I'm not sure about honors yet since I'll be graduating CC with around a 3.7. As far as major goes I am looking into molecular and cellular biology or whatever major by transcripts fall into.

I want to either get into clinical research, particularly something with the heart. Or something along the lines as working with proteins ext..

I have always had the impression that UA med center favored its UA Undergrads. Is this a myth?

The UA med center does not favor UA undergrads over other in-state undergrads. (Just spoke to the pre-med advisor at UA today)

Go to the one that makes you happiest, as others have said. I went to ASU and didn't have trouble accessing the opportunities needed to be a successful pre-med. I'm sure that it is the same at U of A.
