Hello! I am new to the forum but had a question for anyone interested in replying...
I guess I would be what one would consider a non-traditional student and I'm contemplating going to optometry school. However, in the back of my mind, I have this urge to try for medical school. How did all of you decide to go to optometry school vs. other fields (dental, pharmacy) or versus going to medical school? Is there a huge competition difference between fields and how much extra schooling is involved with med school?

What is it about med school, opt school, dental school, or pharm school is appealing to you? What about each of those career fields is appealing? Here's my favorite thing to ask people: Do you want to go to medical school or do you want to be a doctor? A subtle but important difference, in my opinion.
Those are the questions you have to figure out in order to make your choice. Personally, at this point in my life, none of the other health professions seemed to fit into my vision for a career, and optometry seemed to be a perfect match.

I would definitely say that the acceptance processes for med school and dental school are relatively more competitive than for opt school, not to say the opt school app process is easy. If med school is something you've always longed to do, maybe you should talk to some MDs. It can't hurt to talk to people in the career fields that interest you, and it doesn't take much time.
