At what point is research from undergrad different than in medical school?

Next spring semester I am doing a "senior reduced status" program at my school where I only take one or two classes but remain as a full-time resident at my undergraduate institution. This is allowed if you have completed your major and graduation requirements by the fall semester of senior year. I am hoping with my free time that I could get involved in some research with an clinical investigator at the medical school I will be attending who I know, but I am curious if this research could be included later on when I need to match for residency or not. What are your thoughts?

I was told that research is research. The stats you see that say "85% of radiology residents have research experience" (stats made up) include real research from any point during your education. Real researching meaning that you're not just washing beakers and running gels, but that you actually have some say in planning experiments, etc.
