Since I was unsuccessful on my MCAT exam, I wasn't able to apply to a SMP and am forced to spend another year off. I do have some options but one of them I'm trying to work out. I was able to snag an internship for PMR research at the UC Davis Medical Center. I'm really interested in taking it but it is not worth it for me to move out to Davis unless I can take classes as well. I was thinking about coming up with my own post-bacc. I have the option of taking graduate courses through Open Campus at Davis - though there are many hurdles I'll have to jump through to get them. If I can get the professor's approval for each class and successfully petition to exceed the max units for enrollment (for Open Campus students), how many graduate units should I be taking per quarter?

Seems like all of the SMP's are running on the semester system, so I was wondering what would be appropriate for quarters. Has anyone on here tried doing this?

I graduated in Biology with a 3.1 and I feel I'm at the point where taking undergraduate courses will not help me at all. If I can't do this then I'll be jumping ship over to England for grad school. For either option I would retake the MCAT in January, and reapply to SMP and a few US/Carib/DO schools (at least I know St. George's accepts a foreign master's degree and I heard that DO schools do consider it as well).

People at UMDNJ GSBS take ~10 credits a semester (as low as 8, as much as maybe 13 without going overboard), but this may fluctuate greatly between programs and across the US. Are you sure undergrad classes won't help? You could do what I did: take a mix of undergrad and grad classes. Perhaps you get into 1 or 2 grad classes (btw - focusing on research and taking a full class load is not an easy task, make sure you're getting straight A's), you could always take one bio class (maybe a lower level ecology class, or a legit bio class you haven't taken) as well. You have that option and it will help your numbers
