Hi everyone,

I attended Univ. of Va School of Medicine for one semester and withdrew for medical and some personal reasons. I passed all courses and was doing fine. I was accepted at other schools as well.

I am interested in attending a med school again, and given that I withdrew primarily for medical reasons, I feel that I may be able to be accepted at some school again. I realize the only real way to find out is to reapply, but I'd like to know if it's even reasonable idea.

Thanks for any help!

This is a tricky situation. I'd say that unless you can convince UVa to let you back in, you don't have much hope.

I would definitely go and talk to UVa; if you convince them that whatever caused you to withdraw is resolved now and unlikely to recur, they MAY consider letting you back in--but I have no idea whether they ever do this kind of thing. And I doubt this will work if your withdrawal took place a long time ago (i.e. longer than a couple of years ago), because the school won't really have a relationship with you anymore, and will be a lot less motivated to try to help you.

As far as other medical schools are concerned, you're probably persona non grata. The way they see it, you already had a shot and you blew it. (Please understand that I am not judging you--I'm just trying to give you an idea of how these schools are likely to look at it.) It's time-consuming and expensive to admit and train a medical student, and if someone withdraws during the first year, they see that investment as wasted. If the schools know that you enrolled and withdrew from another med school, they'll be reluctant to let you into their school, for fear that you'd withdraw from there also.

Good luck. I hope you're able to work something out.

If you withdrew from UVa for medical reasons, you are likely in "good standing" which is the key to your options. Your first stop is the Deans Office to see where you go from there. Your acceptances at other schools became moot when you spent that semester at UVa whether you continued or not.

If you really do not want to return to UVa, you at least need a strong letter from the Dean stating that you were in good standing and outlining the circumstances of your leave. You mention the word "withdrawal" which carries other liabilities not the least of which is that you may have to provide proof that your medical condition is totally resolved before re-entry. It is also likely that UVa is going to require that you repeat that semester (not a bad idea anyway to get back up to speed). If you still want to leave UVa, then try to opt for transfer after Step I and before clinicals.

In any event, UVa is your "jump off" point. Good luck.

I am curious, I am in the exact same situation, except was attending SGU, a carib medical school and still need a year or so to get better, I am curious what type of response you get, please update me. I was also thinking of applying DO and statewide because of better medical services just in case I need continued medical care for my mental illness, man i hate that word, but behavioral health sounds worse, makes me sound like a bad rebellious teen or something, lol...

this is a phrase that you will hear a lot...document, document, document. If you left school due to medical reasons, get whatever back up material you can from your physician, hospital, etc. If you had a truly medical situation, I'm sure that things can eventually work out and you can pursue your medical school aspirations.

I would love to go back to UVa. It seems to me that if my illness is well documented (which it is, for the most part) I would have a decent chance with UVa, and if UVa is not interested I could probably reapply to a large number of schools and hopefully get an acceptance.

I feel that if it is well-documented and I explain things clearly, I should be able to be accepted SOMEWHERE in the US.

As mentioned above, all roads for you lead through UVa first.

Thanks for all the input on this!! I welcome any other opinions or responses.

Here is where you may get into a problem. If UVa does not allow you to continue, then you have a real problem that may not allow you to gain acceptance into other schools in this county. When you fill out that AMCAS application, there is a question about previous matriculation in medical school You are going to have to answer that question as "yes". Once you do that, any school that may be considering you will contact the University of Virginia.

Withdrawing and then hoping to "do over" may not be an option for you. If you took a medical leave of absence, and your medical issues are resolved, there shouldn't be much of an issue as long as you get your re-entry things done quickly. If you totally withdrew, that brings up many "red flags" that you may not be able to overcome. In any event, you have to resolve any issues with UVa good or bad. If you can't get these resolved, you may not be able to get into any medical school in this country.

In short, you may have "blown" your opportunity depending on the circumstances under which you left UVa. Get this issue figured out and go from there. It's too early to contemplate applying to other schools.
