By mid-June 2013, many applicants have already been accepted by at least one dental school. However, there are many applicants who are still waiting to be accepted off of multiple waitlists. These students are faced with the dilemma of deciding whether to apply again for 2014, or to wait it out for a positive response, hoping that any dental school will accept them.

Reviewing past threads, it has been advised for such applicants to wait until July before reapplying and shelling out hundreds or even thousands of dollars in application fees. After monitoring this forum for the past month, however, waitlist movement has been slower than it has usually been observed in past years' threads. Certainly, the popularity of the dental profession has increased. Hence competition and the number of qualified dental school applicants has increased as well.

It's agonizing to realize that waitlisted students such as me will be handpicked one by one by the ADCOMS, not knowing how this seemingly random process transpires, and thinking that we've been overlooked once again for a "more qualified" waitlister. And from my experience, "more qualified" does not necessarily mean better GPA or DAT score either; it actually means you are "more local." In fact, I had spoken with an admissions director who had said that schools will give acceptances to students who are closer to the school because there is better chance of finding a match, especially at the end of the application cycle when schools are scrambling to fill their classes.

Most of us assume that our luck is not good enough to actually believe that we will be the next in line for a shot at acceptance. Meanwhile, students who have been recently accepted off the waitlist will biasly chant the "don't give up, cause it happened to me" speech; but realistically speaking, chances at this point are slim-to-none, 33% at best, if and only if a seat is open. If, however, the class is full... we can only hope that a specific chain of unpredictable events will take place, so that we can miraculously grab that last remaining seat.

In the School Specific Discussions thread, recent posts have been made by new applicants already regarding the 2014 application cycle for the class of 2018. And with the exception of some schools, the official class of 2017 threads have been quiet, leaving us waitlisters in the dark as to what is going on. It surely seems like everyone else has moved on with their acceptances, but are kind enough to give us their pitying "good luck" speeches.

Though, the truth is that nobody cares two sh*ts about us waitlisters 'cause they all got what they needed. And I don't blame them. It's the nature of the "me versus you game" we call life, and the reason why there is no such thing as a "selfless gene."

So waitlisters... I propose that we exploit each other while we still can. We can forget about each other later, but for now, we must band together and be resourceful.

What can we do to alleviate our anxieties while we decide whether or not we should reapply? Maybe we should use this thread to post.....
-at what schools we are placed on alternate status
-at what schools we intend on attending as our number one
-whether you are located in the same state as the school of interest
-date of application and interview
-what our GPA/DAT scores are for comparison
-and plans for increasing chances for "next year's" cycle

In the end, I'm sure doing this will not really matter; but it will give us a better understanding of the unpredictable shuffling of events that are about to unfold. Will we, or will we not be accepted? Who will go where, so I can go there?

Whoa. When I say "good luck," I mean it. Good luck. :luck:

Don't give up just yet...I've already gotten accepted off two wait lists!

-at what schools we are placed on alternate status UTSD lastweek. After scouring the entire forum, there was only one post ever made about anyone getting off UTSD's alternate list http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=724271&page=14 post#695
-at what schools we intend on attending as our number one UTSD
-whether you are located in the same state as the school of interest Yes
-date of application and interview app submitted mid-July
-what our GPA/DAT scores are for comparison oGPA & sGPA somewhere between 3.60-3.80, DAT 22/23/25 AA/TS/PAT
-and plans for increasing chances for "next year's" cycle Applying OOS fullforce

School waitlisted: ECU

GPA: undergrad o3.8 s3.4 grad gpa 3.4

Plans for next yr: more volunteer hours, continue working in the field

Schools: Penn, Louisville, UDM, Creighton, MWU-AZ, Maryland.

It's so stressful being on so many wait lists. I can't even describe how I feel as I oscillate between optimism and pessimism.

I think you have a great shot at getting off one of the 6 waitlists! Good luck!!!

OK, so I gonna chip in.
My wait list : NOVA, UDM, Buffalo and may be UNLV ( interviewed and eventually got rejected at Indiana and U of Michigan). All are pre-Dec interviews. I'm on a foreign (non Canadian) visa if that matters
GPA: c: 3.6s, s:3.5s
my first DAT score set was 20,21,21,21,20,19,17 with 17 is RC score. I waited 7 months and did not get any phone call.
I ignored other people's advices and retook the DAT again (mid June). It was the best $385 bucks I have ever spent. My new DAT scores are 22,23,24,26,22,20,22,19 (QR). I emailed my DAT and called the school to make sure they got my new scores. I just got a call from the dean of admission at NOVA today offering me a spot. He said he likes my improvement. I love NOVA and am grateful to be given this opportunity. I know there are many well-qualified people who have not received any offer so far, but just hang in there. I know it sucks so bad because I could not function properly for months. My little piece of advice is be persistent. I called, wrote emails to NOVA every month for the past seven months. But also beware that actions speak louder than words. You have to prove to the adcom that you did try your best: retake you DAT, attend pre-dent sim classes, do dental mission trip, apply for master program, more volunteer hours and shadowing hours, join ASDA. I did all of that after being placed on the wait lists. As for EMORY, I truly hope you will get a spot at UDM, it's an awesome school. I'm impressed with your DAT score and I wish you luck :luck:

Thanks for the optimism guys!

My main goal right now is to maintain a healthy balance of optimism for the past cycle and show schools I'm still interested, but also keep working to improve myself for the upcoming cycle. Much easier said than done.

This thread isn't going to work itself here. Waitlisters Unite!

Wow, we have the similar GPA/DAT. I'm also waitlisted at UTSD. My top choice is Houston, and I'm from Dallas.
