Scrubs all days? If not, is it business casual?

I rather wear scrubs than dress up all the time. I wore the same thing all throughout undergrad--a light jacket and jeans--so I could 100% focus on my studies (that's my excuse anyway). Where does one start in terms of picking business casual attire if one does not have any fashion sense whatsoever?

Think about it like this. How would you like your health care professional to look? Also, take into consideration, are you willing to ruin that nice shirt/slacks with pt's saliva, blood, aerosol, necrotic stuff, exudates, pus, etc.?

Me personally, I only wear scrubs to school. I wash my scrubs with a little of bleach and in a separate load.

I have already considered that, which is why I am asking where to start. I see. Thanks.

Depends on the school too. Some schools allow scrubs everywhere, I know of one school that only allows business casual in clinic. Depends.

Pick up some fashion catalogs and spend some time at the mall with tailored brands (Banana Republic, Brooks Brothers, etc).

On days when we we have to wear business casual in my program, for the guys, it's usually a dress shirt (with a tie - some older professors will comment on that if you don't) and dress pants.

Those brands tailor for you at the mall? How much is the additional tailoring?

Banana Republic doesn't offer that as far as I know, but Brooks Brothers' Made to Measure offers tailored dress shirts, suits, etc. depending on what you're looking for. Clothes are mass produced according to generic sizes. If you want them to fit you well, then I'd suggest a third-party tailor who would fix up dress shirts, suits, pants etc for less than what retail tailors would charge you.

I appreciate the source. I just don't want to spend the time and effort scanning through fashion catalogs; I moved here to go to dental school, not to dress up all dapper and whatnot and attempt to superficially impress.

Question: I will go clothes shopping for business casual professional lookin' attire. I do not have any type of clothes that fits this bill. I do have a suit though.

How much money should I set aside from my savings here? I plan to wear business casual when I am not in scrubs

It depends on your schools dress code. Some schools don't care if you wear t-shirts and flip flops to lecture, while others require more professional attire. Some require scrubs all the time.
If you're school doesn't care how you dress for didactics, don't stress the clothing part too much. During exams, everyone looks disheveled. With barely any time to sleep, fashion is not a priority.
If you want to save a few bucks, you can try an outlet store, but it's not guaranteed you will find anything. Department stores like Macy's (which have better prices than I expected) have sales folks walking around. You can ask them for advice on outfits, styles, colors, etc.
You also don't need to do it all at once. Buy a pair of pants and a shirt or two. Repeat every few months. Just make sure you have appropriate shoes, socks, and belt.

Will try that. Hopefully it gets me somewhere. I am also willing to hire a fashion stylist if the employee at Macy's isn't up to par.

Edit: how much do you think it will cost in total? I still realize this is a highly dependent question.

It all depends. Where you go, what brand you buy, if the item is on sale or clearance, etc.

As I explicitly stated, I evidently realize that it depends on virtually infinite possibilities. For all intents and purposes, a rough estimate was the intention of my post.

Craig,

You don't need to spend money on a fashion stylist. Dental school is expensive enough as it is. I would recommend starting with this thread:

Building a Basic Wardrobe v6.0 • r/malefashionadvice

Just take a day to read through that, and other threads on that subreddit (they have tons of great information). You should be able to get a basic professional wardrobe for a couple hundred dollars.

Hope this helps!
