it seems that there is no clear data source for rates of attrition and rates of transfers from preliminary to categorical positions.

So, how would one go about gleaning such data on a given program?

I've been asking every program I've gone to. So far, the consensus seems to be that approximately 15-20% is the national average. The highest i've heard of so far is 30% at BIDMC. A few including MGH had essentially a 0% attrition rate in the past few years. If you are interested in a given program, I'd write to a resident there and ask. Good luck!
