Went to the AUC open house last Sunday and it was very informative. They had 4 Alumni come and speak to us and tell us about there experience. They are all doing great things and they spoke to us about several topics that I found interesting. One of the things I liked about it is they did not seem to BS any of us. They were very honest and forthcoming about what attending a Carribean Med School meant. They did not sugar coat anything, and they fully admitted that as a Carribean student, you do have to prove yourself and do well, but if you work your ass off, you can and will accomplish what you want.

One aspect they talked about was how some of them did some of their clinicals in England and said it was one of the best experiences of their lives. I've always wanted to do medicine oeve sees and England seems like it would be awesome for that. They wouldn't trade it for the world, and contrary to what a lot of people said about doing clinicals in England, it actually was looked upon positively when it came to their interviews for residency. They were all happy with their choices, and would do it again.

They also said that while on the island, you could tell which students were the ones who were just not cut out to be doctors, and the ones who are and just weren't given the chance in the US schools. (because of gpa or MCAT issues mostly). But they said those people were soon weeded out and usually didn't sticj around.

I also liked the smaller class size at AUC as compared to some of the other schools.

I won't ramble on here, but I will say that it seemed like the overall message about Carribean, or at least AUC, is that the education you receive is not inferior, and if you work hard and prove yourself, you can match in a good residency and be successful, it is just up to you once you get there. If I could I would still go to a US school, but if that was not an option I would not feel as though AUC would be taking a step down as far as becoming a doctor.

The AUC pitch was, by far, the most warm and fuzzy. SGU was a little more fancy but AUC sent a great message.
