I was hoping someone could expand a bit on the potential benefits of having audition rotations their 4th year. As a future DMU student, I've heard both good and bad things about it. Hopefully this thread can help other students going to schools that do audition rotations as well.

From what I understand, there are about 8 weeks of required rotations (at DMU) that should be done after December, so we can spend all our time focusing on elective rotations of our choice before turning in residency applications in December.

So let's say I'm interested in general surgery. Once 4th year rotations begin, does this mean I basically bounce around different sites with general surgery programs and rotate there? This would mean I would spend 4-5 months solely focusing on GS, correct? It sounds like a great way to show dedication to your field of choice, and for different GS programs to get to know you. I suppose that's the benefit of elective rotations.

Additionally, how long are elective rotations? Do we get to pick how long we stay at each site, or is there a set amount of time (like 3 weeks) to rotate before we move to the next site?

Thanks in advance!!!

Auditions are very important for AOA residencies. Perhaps even more than COMLEX score. The programs want to know you, what your skill set is, and if they think you'd fit in their program so auditions are how they decide that.

I was curious exactly how it worked, but I came to the conclusion that I would figure it out by the time it affected me 3 1/2 YEARS FROM NOW. You gunner.

Yea..you guys have plenty of time to figure this stuff out! It's good to know whats coming though.

Applications are actually submitted starting in September for most programs. From there, interviews are granted and generally last from late October through December of 4th year. There may be some deviations from that timeframe but you get the general idea.

Auditions are important for AOA programs. It is also a good time to get letters of recommendation. They typically begin in mid-July and last throughout the fall. It is up to you how many to schedule. I am personally doing 4 months, and then scheduling an easier FM rotation in November and taking December off so I have time to interview. Keep in mind, I have been told that more than 3 auditions is a lot, and to be cautious in scheduling too many so you don't burn out from changing locations every month. Also - be aware that DMU only lets you do 4 months of any one specialty elective 4th year (as of right now).

Haha, no gunning here I promise! I was just thinking about what my 4 years at DMU will look like, and 4th year was blurry. 😳

I see! Thanks for the info!

Yeah I've always gathered that you want to pick your very top and most realistic places of matching to for the audition rotations. I'm not sure how other schools work, but during our 4th year at LMU, we are going to get 2 months that we can split into 4 2- wk rotations....I haven't really figured out if 2 wks is a sufficient amount of time to do an audition at a hospital, but if it is, I will likely use a couple of those and then a full month one at my very top pick, so that I can have more time at that one. Talk to your clinical rotations dept to get the most accurate details on stuff like that.

Another thing I hear a lot is that you don't want to become too focused on one thing in your electives. We get a lot at DCOM (around 10 or so that are fairly free to choose), so it's something to be cautious of....since you're going to spend your auditions in programs you're interested in, or at least something related to that specialty, I would say just make sure you do some other areas to round out your experiences. Just what I've heard though...

👍

Most definitely. 4th year s your time to schedule what interests you outside of your specialty! You will be spending the next 3-5 years learning about your field of choice..do some interesting/cool rotations that you've always wanted to do after auditions!

I'm so excited for rotations now! Although I doubt I'll be saying that during them, haha.

Thanks everyone!

Oh, no, I think you'll be singing the same song then when you're on rotations...cause you're going to be so thankful not to be in the (insert expletives) classroom anymore. Sigh. 🙂

I honestly cannot freakin wait....July couldn't come soon enough even if it started tomorrow. Last year I thought I'd never feel ready for it clinically speakin and knowledge wise, but at a certain point you just stop caring because you realize you're still not going to know anything until at least after internship is done
