I just found out that my Step 2 CS score will not be available by my school's dedline and I might have to graduate in August. Does anyone know if I can stary my residency in July if I do not officially graduate until August?

You have 3 options:
1) Speak with your dean about the school letting you graduate without the CS because at least you have taken it, and you have already passed the CK. No one knew about the CS score processing schedule that was instituted late last year. The school is not bound by any external rules to require that you pass CS before you graduate. Explain that to them in a face to face meeting. Hopefully the school will see the light and make an exception for you.

2) Let the match take its course. Shortly after the match you will get a contract. Sign, seal, and submit the contract. After the contract is completed and approved, let the program director know of the situation. It might create a momentary "situation" but the program would likely be able to accomodate you. You would attend orientation and then some of your weeks of vacation would be shifted to July, followed by some unpaid weeks.

3) Let the program director know about your situation immediately and risk not being given a contract for the 2006-2007 year. (It is a less likely that the PD would do that, but it could happen.)

Think over your choices and make a wise decision.

Do we need to have taken Step 2 CS to obtain the temporary license necessary to begin training? Also, if we take it later this Spring and unexpectedly fail, can a person still start their internship or would it be at the discretion of the PD?

A similar situation happened to a good friend of mine recently. For the first month of his intern year other residents had to counter-sign his notes/prescriptions until he got the passing results of his clinical skills exam back.

Similar thing happened at my school last year too, except my school has a rule that you have to have a passing CS score on file to graduate. Those people that didn't were allowed to walk at graduation, but did not officially receive their diploma or technically "graduate" until they had a passing score on file. I'm not sure what their residency programs did, but I think that one didn't let the girl start until after the school said she had graduated. I would check with your PD as soon as you know, and see what they want you to do. Sometimes people with more influence can sweet talk a dean into letting you graduate contigent upon receiving a passing score.

I think a lot of this is school and residency dependent. I know at my school, we only have to sit for CS, not pass it, to graduate. Similarly, I know that some residency programs (at least per FREIDA) do not require that you have passed the CS before starting residency. Talk to the PD.
