Edit:
I am just going to cut out most of the odd rambling that I did originally in this..

If I want to review for content-only about 3 months before I begin studying for the test, should I study from the MCAT books themselves, or should I read from my textbooks or other sources? I don't feel like it is a terrible idea to study out of the books themselves, provided that I am not testing at all, including the practice passages.

You could probably do some light reading from a good text but be mindful of burn out. If I were you, I'd probably try to keep my mind sharp by reading journal articles actively every week and finding general MCAT problem solving tips and getting familiar w/ them.
