Hey everyone!

I just wanted to ask if anyone knew anything about NZ or Aussie dental schools. I was looking into the USA (im Canadian) but just in case i dont get in, I wanted to know how it works in AUS/NZ. I will have BSc. next month and will be applying for 2006. I guess, i want to know how long the program is, and if I can come back and work in the USA or Canada. Any help would be great!.

thanks

Hey, I am a 2nd year at Sydney University so hopefully I might be able to give you some info. We do have a handful of North Americans (US/Canadian) students here. Although I think some of them are dual citizens having a parent who is Australian.
Sydney University is the only 4-year graduate entry dental school currently in Australia similar to dental programs in North America. They changed to this new curriculum 5 years ago from the traditional British system 5-year undergrad program, and apparently our program is supposed to be very similar to Harvard’s (from what I’ve been told). It’s PBL and didactics mixed, and we do the entire first 2-years with the medical students plus our dental curriculum. We get pretty good clinical experience and get to see patients starting first year. Also, we have a new dean this year who previously was the executive director of both the American and International institutes of dental research, and past faculty at the new UNLV (las vegas?) dental school last year.

I know a couple of the American and Canadian students here currently are planning on returning back home to practice after they finish and some I think are going to apply to specialty programs (of which our school has some close ties to in US/Canada). Our Dean attended some meeting recently with the ADA (American Dental Association) CDA (Canadian Dental Association and ADA (Australian Dental Association) concerning reciprocal licensure agreements between the three countries.

You should probably contact Ann Quinlan in the admissions office. She might be able to give you some more detailed information.

But I’ll let you know if any new information becomes available.

Cheers!

Sydney University is the only 4-year graduate entry ....

Thanks for your help!

I was also wondering what Kind of grades or grade point average the school is looking for. On the website it was saying 4.0 average ( pass at Sydney) what exactly does that mean? Can you put that in terms of a North American average??

Again, not sure exactly how your gpa converts. I think the canadian schools have a diff system than the US of calculating gpa too. Again, I think it would be best to contact Ann Quinlin in the admissions office.

spoke to a canadian classmate and I think they will accept the US and Canadian DAT exam, I think they ask for at least around an 18 min to be considered. Your acceptance is based on DAT, gpa, interview, and after your interview you will be required to complete a 'manual skills exam' which consists of a wirebending and wax carving exercise.

Can anyone please tell me what is involved in the interview for University of Sydney dentistry?

Does anyone know the status of the proposed recipricol agreement with Australia and USA/Canada? Will Aus dental grads be allowed to work in North America without having to go back to school for 2 years?

Hey lucylill,

Well.. After you send in your application and have your exam scores sent in (GAMSAT or DAT), as well as your transcripts from your previous degree. Sydney will then let you know if they have decided to grant you an interview or not. During the interview.. typically you will be in front of a panel of 3 persons. They will ask you the typical dental school Q&A stuff.. then you have to sit your manual skills exam which includes (orthodontic wire bending to a template.. as well as a wax carving exercise). That's basically it.

Our program is combined.. so we do PBL and diaditic lectures (and labs) etc. We do the entire first two years of the medical school's curriculum as well as our classes and clinics.. so be prepared to be busier than a medical student at least for the first couple of years. 🙂

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Thank you for your reply Doc! 🙂
I have found the demo on wax carving in Usyd website. Would wax carving exercise differ from year to year and how long does the interviews go for?

Wax carving exercises are always the same. same goes for the wire bending exercise. Typically I think interviews last around half an hour with a panel of three interviewers.
They will give you the manual skills exams when you come for your interview either before or afterwards. Good Luck!

hi, i am a usyd student having a dent interview this year !!!

i was just wondering whether there are any suprising questions in the interview ?

do u need a basic knowledge od health and dentistry interviews for some questions or do they ask some major question about a specific topic in the field ?

Also i heard there are the typical scenario questions like: "what would u do if a kid starts crying when ur trying to insert a needle ?"

anyways, ur help will be greatly appreciated !!!

can someone tell me anything about the questions in the interview or tell me where i can get some study materials !!!

its my 1st time ever at a dent interview

thanx

kind regards

Sydney did away with the traditional interview format and uses the MMI which is a set of mini scenarios usually dealing with ethics. A good way to prepare for this interview is to go the library and read up on medical ethics, maybe try a few
discussions with peers on various medical ethics issues(abortion, etc.).

Sydney Dental is the only grad entry program in Australia. In general if you go to Australia you can say goodbye to working in North America as a dental student, currently your degree will not be recognized in the US and Canada, and the faculty has mentioned this on its website. Its okay if you decide that you want to stay in Oz.

Moving to a new country is a very big decision, research it fully, and the best advice is to try living in Australia for an extended period of time such as a few months to see if you will really like it here.

The culture of Australia has some similarities to North America but there are also vast differences. People from the US will find Aussies to be somewhat more left of Americans in political views and attitudes but Canadians will find Australia to be a conservative country though not as much as the US.

I agree with pretty much everything that JoeNamaMD has said. The only thing I would like to add is that Melbourne University will also be a 4 year graduate entry dental school in a year and half from now and will be pretty much identical to Sydney's program. Also, Sydney's dental program has started its CODA review this year and is aiming to be accredited in the US and Canada within the next few years. Even though it hasn't yet been accredited in US/Canada, Sydney accepts about 10 North American students every year (mostly Canadian). Many of them have already successfully returned to the US. Those who have returned simply completed a 2 year GPR or AEGD residency (something many US students are doing these days anyways) and then obtained a US state license.

Here is an example of one such student. 👍

Hmm the thing with the CODA accredition. Do you have a rough idea how long it usually takes? I'm a Canadian and I think my dent school here will not take me (GPA3.7ish also a ontario resident to make it worse). Hope I can make it into Usyd in the future so in about 6years will it be done? I guess I can live in Aus if I had to cuz I lived in Wollongong when I was little for 2years but still I wanna come back if it is possible. Any thoughts? Can the accredition commitee refuse Usyd's request??

And also in Canada I understand now that internationally trained dentist need to do 2years of additional training which costs $$$ again right?? Sounds like under alot of debt for a while lol.
