Would it be appropriate to request my PhD advisor for authorship credit even though I did not contribute ideas? If so, what would be a polite way to ask without sounding "imposed"... I did contribute a lot of input into running the actual study though and I feel like this would help on my app. Thank you all! @Goro @Wahkoon @HomeSkool

Are you at the stage where people are writing the paper already? Usually, it's common practice to add undergrads as authors even if they did not contribute to the design stage of the project but if they had a substantial role doing data collection and analysis, they are typically included. It's understood that undergrads need the publications to be competitive for graduate programs and so they usually get added on as subsequent authors.

Thanks for replying. Not quite yet into the writing the paper phase -- still running the study for another year (the year I'm applying). However, I helped with data and running the study.

Depends on your level of familiarity with the PI and how formal they are but I'd start out with the "Hey just wanted to ask what your thoughts are on authorship since I'm thinking about applying to X" or "Hey what do you think my chances are of being a coauthor on Y paper?"

Authorship should always be talked about prior to working on a project so that expectations are set, for instance, if your PI knew you wanted authorship they may have given you different responsibilities.

But that ship has sailed, so now I would suggest the you tell your PI that you are interested in authorship and learning more about the publication writing/process. If you let your interest in that be known your PI may ask you to help with the manuscript (writing the lit review, make figures, add in the citations, etc.). This would be your best bet, and a better chance of getting authorship than just asking for your name to be tacked on.

Unless your PI is an a-hole, they'll probably give you some authorship credit if they know that you want to apply to medical school.

What exactly did you do to Merit authorship?

Instead of asking for authorship, why not ask what you can do to deserve authorship?

The International Committee of Medical Journal Editors Recommendations for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing, and Publication of Scholarly Work in Medical Journals (ICMJE Recommendations 2018) recommend that authorship be based on the following four criteria:

• Substantial contributions to the conception or design of the work; or the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data for the work; AND
• Drafting the work or revising it critically for important intellectual content; AND
• Final approval of the version to be published; AND
• Agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work in ensuring that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work are appropriately investigated and resolved.

If they use your data in the manuscript you will get authorship...
