👍

And you have a three hour anatomy lab today. It's a lot to deal with on your first day. Just remember, no one's watching you and you can leave for five minutes to take a break. I'm not sure if you've been following what other people have been saying about anatomy on the general 2017 thread, but if so, they're right. Try to get a reasonably skinny dog of moderate size. We had a pretty good size shepherdy type with not a lot of extra fat on her, she was great. Another group had a huge fat lab. I can't tell you how much more time they spent just cleaning fat. :barf:

😀 There was a grossly obese golden on one of the tables...he was the last one to find a group and it didn't look like fun!

I wish I knew who you guys are!! We should have a SDN meet-up or something. I feel like I've probably talked to some of you without even realizing it.

I'm pretty happy my group ended up with a small/medium sized female with little fat. Today was fun!!!

This is a fabulous idea. BlackDog and I live on the same property and we haven't even met yet! 😛

I would be down for that! I think I've identified one or two SDNers from a distance, but I wasn't certain enough to actually go ask them. I'm pretty easy to spot - tall, probably wearing something crew/rowing related, driving the most easily identifiable pickup truck ever. 😛

Come say hi, I don't bite! 😀

lol, it's really kind of ridiculous. I was so busy chasing my family around all week I never got a chance to come say hi! We should fix that soon.

I also avoided the chubby dog! I'm up for an SDN meet-up. I only know two people here in "real life".

Can I just say all of you guys make me want to go to AVC 😀

Maybe we could do an SDN lunch date this week or next week, so long as no one has other commitments during that time?

Lunch this week is good for me!! 😀 I haven't spotted any of you guys but then again I have no idea what you look like hahaha

How about tomorrow at 12:30?? Where should we meet?

Lunch is good...as long as that works for other years too!

I have a class meeting plus path club meeting tomorrow.

We could always do a first year SDN lunch tomorrow and plan to meet the upper years another day.

Let's do it! I'm good for lunch tomorrow. My locker is 55 and I sit second row, third from the right 🙂

I joined the path, emergency, bovine and canine club. I'm stoked!

Where do you guys want to meet? 🙂

I joined equine, bovine and small ruminant today! I wanted to join more clubs but I didn't want to pay for something I might not have time to participate in. 🙁

Anyone know if it's possible to join clubs a little later on once I have a better idea of how much free time I will have?

Sorry, I'd rather do a different day for lunch but if tomorrow works for you all go ahead! 🙂

Yep. What usually happens is when a club is having a wetlab, they'll pass around sign-up sheets to the classes. The sheets ask if you're a paid member or not. If you want to go but you're not a member, just write "No, but will pay dues" or something. Previously paid members get first preference, but I've done lots of wetlabs by just signing up for one event.

Clubs don't really take up any time if you're just part of them to do events. Basically if you don't want to do a wetlab/lunch lecture, you just don't sign up for it. The time commitment is a bit more involved if you choose to hold an executive position in the club.

Is it just the four of us? I'm trying to think of a place where it will be easy to spot each other. Maybe by the fish tanks in the learning commons?

From what I was told, there's no time commitment for any of the clubs so you can sign up for every single one so you'll get the emails, and then just go to the events you're interested in or have time for. You also don't need to pay any dues until you actually attend an event, so it's totally possible to just contact one of the exec board or class reps in the club to join later in the semester.

I signed up for bovine, small ruminant, therio, wildlife, zoo/exotics, pathology, wellness, teaching animal, AHAA, the blood donor program, and I signed up to snuggle the blood donor kitties. 😀

Thanks for the info guys!!

Would friday at lunch work better for the upper years also? Would be fun if most of us were there 😀

You can always join clubs later. Volunteering for the pet loss support line is free...just throwing that out there 😉

I can do lunch on Friday 🙂

I can do Friday. I've got a class exec meeting tomorrow.

And what's up with all of you not signing up for lab animal?! 😉 Kidding... But seriously, it's obviously the coolest club. I was at the table today, so you guys probably saw me without realizing it. Except for a couple minutes when I went to the path table to sign up (and eat their Hershey's kisses).

👍 Lab animal = cool. Also no feline club?! Cats are awesome. If you signed up to snuggle the blood donor kitties that will suffice 😉

Friday lunch works for me too!

I just realized that my previous post basically repeated what everyone else had already said . . . this is what happens when it takes 20 minutes to load a page. 🙄

Sooo turns out there's a health club meeting tomorrow during lunch...

Coquette - was that you? haha if so, your stuff was right in front of me!

Too-Love - maybe it won't take the entire lunch time? 🙁

So guys where are we meeting? I'm super pumped 😀

Yeah, I wanted to go to that too. I think I'm just going to skip it and go to the next one instead. 😛

I agree...by the sounds of it they're just going to be signing people up for MyFitnessPal and I've been on that for years.

So are we on for lunch at 12:30 today? Where should we meet?

I hope everyone had fun last night on the pub crawl! If you didn't go enjoy your blissful hangover free day 🙂

It was nice meeting everyone last friday, even though I still have no idea who any of the upper years are! haha 🙁 We forgot to mention our usernames!

I've heard that we can have fecal samples read for no charge downstairs at diagnostic services. Short of just dropping poo off...do we need to label it with anything specific and how do we get the results?

It's been awhile since I did it, but I think it needs your name, species (the pet's species, not yours), and your email because they email you the results.

I'm not sure if they're doing that anymore. Our parasitology professor last semester said they were supposed to stop doing that when we lost our student discount. The techs ran them for us free of charge last semester if we contacted the parasitology profs to set up a time.

Maybe there was a miscommunication or rule change and the readings are still free. I hope so :xf:

How would I go about finding out?

A standard fecal for birds where I work is a direct and gram stain, but I'm guessing if anything it would just be a direct smear right?

And while we're on the subject, it seems like a lot of students don't use the VTH for their own pets...is that just because there's no discount?

I would contact one of your parasitology professors (Conboy would probably be best) to ask about it. I have no idea what they require for a bird, but the more poop the better most likely 😉

I don't use the VTH, mostly because when I called the first time in first year they had no vets available (not no appointments, no vets 😕) and they said they could schedule me in with an intern emergency only. While not an emergency, it was urgent, and I didn't really appreciate the attitude I got about it. So I asked the desk lady if she had any suggestions and she recommended the vet that she takes her pets to nearby. They've been nothing but awesome (except one lady vet there that no one likes). Plus the VTH will charge you a heckuva lot more for essentially the same thing. With no student discount, it doesn't really make sense. However, for something exotic like your bird, your best bet may be the VTH (don't know if you've heard of Dr. D - she's the exotics lady and she seems pretty awesome from our exotics class).

I take Libby to the VTH for her cancer and kidney issues. My other pets go to a local clinic. The local clinic I go to sees rodents, I'm not sure about birds. They've been great with my hamsters. For me it's more convenient and less expensive.
