On average, how much did you spend on your med school applications with MCAT prep and interview cost included? I'm a sophmore and I'm thinking of setting up a savings account for this.

Yes, I did use the search function but those threads were several years old.

You should look on mdapplicants.com, a bunch of people put up all of their expenses.

http://www.mdapplicants.com/profile.php?id=17938

12 apps, 6 interviews, total came out to $2200. Add ~$80 per secondary, like $300 per interview.

This person got lucky because he/she lived nearby the schools where he/she interviewed.

For me, its gonna cost a small fortune. I'm applying to 30+ schools, spent 1400+ on primaries, close to 3000 on secondaries and I haven't even gotten to the interviews yet...really really hope I won't have to do this again...

Cost can vary alot based on whether you take an MCAT prep class, how many schools you apply to, and how many places you interview.

MCAT prep: Here is some info on pricing for MCAT prep courses. http://www.studentdoctor.net/2006/12/the-price-of-mcat-prep/

I personally didn't take one of these prep courses. MCAT prep should be review, not learning new material. I don't think classroom direction is necessary for review. A good review book will run you $100-$150.

Primaries: Applying to 20 schools will cost about $800.

Secondaries: They generally cost $80-$100 each. Filling out 20 secondaries would probably cost around $1800. It varies quite a bit by school.

Interviews: $300-$400 per interview is my estimate. This could be cut down by scheduling multiple interviews for a single trip and staying with a student host.

My total costs will probably be between $3500 and $4000. I'm just starting interview season.

MCAT books passed down from a med student: $0
Early Assurance AMCAS application: $0
The single secondary application: $0
Gas to drive to my interview last spring: 40$ (stayed with a friend and already had a suit).

Net cost: $40

God I am cheap.

MCAT Prep course: $1700
MCAT Fees: $300
Primaries: 1000$ (26 schools)
Secondaries: $1500 (20 Schools)
Interview Clothing: $1000
Flights, Hotels, etc: $1000...and counting

Now that I add it all up...yikes!

I'm guessing around $3,000 for myself, but likely well above that. I will also be buying interview clothes, so if you want to count that, tack on another $800. It might actually be around $4,500 when all is said and done. Really hope I get in this cycle.

Prep Course + Mcat: $1300 (got half off)
Primaries 2010: $1100 (26 schools)
Secondaries 2010: $2000 (22 schools)
Interviews/travel: $1000 (2 schools + clothes)

Primaries 2011: $1400 (33 schools)
Secondaries 2011: $3000 (33 schools)
Interviews (so far): $700

Total: $9500 so far! Jeeeeez!

I didn't take any sort of MCAT prep stuff and only applied to one school, so my application process was dirt cheap.

^seeing as it says "Medical student", i'd assume he/she was accepted

Damn it! I wish I was smart so I didn't have to apply to so many schools.

I think when it was all said and done from MCAT class through interviews... i probably dropped 10k, u know back in 2006-2008, before the economy took a crap on itself

MCAT: ~$120
Primaries: ~$700
Secondaries: (in progress)

if you dont get in, i FEEL very bad for your 10k debt, unless you got folks paying for it (which u probably do, but will deny).

HAHA thanks. No debt, I've worked full-time since I was 16 so I had most of it covered, but I won't deny that my parents have helped out as well when funds get low.

In what state is this legal?

I'm still in the process of applying but here's me so far:

MCAT: $230+$1800 prep class=$2030
Primary: 21 schools=approx. $870
Secondaries: ugh, let's say about $2000?
Suit/Shoes/etc: $600

agonizing nervousness and anticipation while 21 admissions committees hold my fate in their hands: priceless

Threads like these are just damned depressing.
