Average GPA of all most medstudents..

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I know its a very generalized thing to say, but according to you what GPA would an average med student have in the US?

Hi SQUmedic. The average acceptee to a US medical school has an undergraduate GPA of ~3.65. Although this is an average and the range is great, most are at least over a 3.3. Grading in medical school itself is not usually on a grade point scale, and the actual system varies by school. Most classes are graded as FAIL, PASS, HIGH PASS (~top 20%), or HONORS (~top 10%). But the percentages on this curve vary. And again so does the grading system itself. Some schools only have three levels, FAIL/PASS/HONORS. Some schools only use PASS or FAIL, and no kind of an honors distinction at all. Some use PASS/FAIL in the basic science courses, but use the FAIL/PASS/HIGHPASS/HONORS system in clinical training.

Although the variety in scale is great, the average would be a simple "pass." Most students to not fail and most do not get the high pass or honors. And again many schools do not even use high pass or honors. In general, the residency match process relies more on board exam scores for testing your science knowledge than grades, although it is often thought that clinical grades carry a little more weight.

Right, Thanks rooter76 for taking out time to write down all that. 🙂

i hear average of people accepted is 3.7

This deals with the GPA of medical students, not premeds that have been accepted to med. school (although a 3.7 or above GPA, IMO, is a "safe" GPA to have for premeds).
