Hi guys. Yes, I've used the search function, and YES i've looked http://www.aamc.org/data/facts/applicantmatriculant/table17-fact2009mcatgpa98-09-web.pdf and found that an average science GPA for matriculants is a 3.60.. But my counselor at school told me that I HAD to get an average of 3.70 to even be "considered" for med schools.

1) Does anyone know the average for CA schools?
2) and does the av on AMCAS (3.60) appear to be a good indicator of average?

Couldn't find medians.

I'm just wondering because I have a 3.64/5ish. Sigh.

If you've searched, then you should already know that most premed counselors don't know jack.

I would suggest consulting an MSAR, there's probably one available in your campus library if you check. Perusing school websites often helps too. Here's what the 2011 MSAR had for median accepted CA gpa's:

(note that they are rounded to the nearest tenth, for what it's worth)

UC-Irvine: 3.8/3.7 cum/sci
UCLA: 3.8 cum/sci
UCSD:3.8 cum/sci
UCSF: 3.8 cum/sci
UC-Davis: 3.7 cum/sci
Stanford: 3.8 cum/sci
Loma Linda: 3.8 cum/sci
USC: 3.7 cum/sci

Unfortunately, California is just one of those states with freakishly high averages all around. A 3.64/3.5 isn't bad if you're willing to go out of state for school, however, it IS low if your goal is to stay in state. I do personally know people that have been accepted with 3.5's, so it's doable, but most had a high MCAT as well as strong ECs. Don't let your GPA drop any lower. 🙂

are you sure UCI's is that high? on their site they have this:

The 2009 entering class had the following statistics:
Matriculated 104
Mean Cum GPA 3.66
Mean Science GPA 3.64
MCAT Verbal 10
MCAT Physical Science 11
MCAT Biological Science 11
MCAT Writing Sample Q

yes this is 2009 and not 2010 but still, I cannot imagine it raising so dramatically in just one year

but to the OP, youre fine if you have a solid MCAT (im gonna say 33+) and great ECs.. Remember its not just numbers, UCs to my knowledge also look for well-rounded applicants (as most schools do)

The difference, I'm guessing, may be due to difference in accepted as opposed to matriculated students. Honestly if you ask me I think the acceptance statistics are more valuable.

oh thats right-- makes a lot of sense. im guessing what drove the acceptance average up for UCI is that a lot of people on the higher end got multiple acceptances and rejected UCI? Nevertheless, its definitely possible to make it to UCI and any CA school in the 3.6 range, as long as you have an above average MCAT and great ECs/LORs/Essays (like i said before, 33 minimum)

I thought most schools averaged a 3.7? We're a 3.71 (Emory and MCG).

Actually there's a pretty funny thread buried here somewhere about all the stupid things that premed advisers say.
