average number of required lor

hey everyone
im a third year in college and i need to get started on acquiring some lor. right now im in the process of getting a lor from my biochem prof ie trying to get to know him, ask questions, etc. i heard that on average that we need 2 from a science prof and 1 from any professor. can anyone confirm that? any info would be appreciated.
