So, I know that you can get out of having to do an extra AOA intern year for the 4 states through resolution 42 but does anyone have experience in avoiding the extra year through taking USMLE Step 1, 2 CS, 2 CK and then eventually 3? It is possible to go through this route, right? I've tried go through each of the state's licensing board but I haven't been able to find anything specific for osteopathic grads.

I'm looking at a few programs in MI/PA/FL that I would really be interested in but the extra year is kindof a dealbreaker. I've already taken Step 1 and am planning on taking all Step 2's if it would allow me to gain licensure in all states without having to worry about the osteopathic medical board.

Any insight is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

You are confused. In states with an osteopathic board, that is the sole licensing authority for DO's. The USMLE is irrelevant. Some osteopathic boards accept them, others don't. You don't do an extra year, you simply get your PGY-1 year approved under Resolution 42, assuming it meets the criteria.

Oh really? I was under the impression that you could achieve licensure through the USMLE. I guess I may have been mistaken. Thanks for the clarification everyone!

Arch Guillotti mentioned in an old post that he had gotten licensed with USMLE Step 1-3 scores, I believe. However, I don't know if it is still possible to do this today. It is likely state dependent, as mentioned in that thread.

It's up to each state to determine licensure criteria. 4 states require that you have an AOA-approved Intern Year. Whether that is done at an AOA internship or at an ACGME internship (with AOA approval via Resolution 42) is up to you.

As for licensure examinations, it is up to each state which exams the state will accept. Some state will accept either USMLE or COMLEX. Others will only accept COMLEX and will not accept USMLE. California and Florida are some of the states that will NOT accept USMLE for licensure.

It is my understanding that the states with a separate osteopathic licensure board are COMLEX for state licensure. There may be an exception or two.

And there aren't 4 states requiring a DO intern year, just 3. For some reason OK gets included in that list, however they require certain rotations in the intern year but do not require a DO internship.
