Should I list being invited to an honors section of Physics 2 as one of the top students in Physics 1 as an Award/Honor? I received an official letter for this from the department. Also, my chemistry professor explicitly told me that I was the highest grade in his class. Can I list this as well? I feel like these distinguish me better more than an "A" in the classes will.

No. I mean, you can throw it in under an Honors/Awards heading if you really want to, but that won't carry any weight whatsoever. Most people applying to medical school are at the top of their class, so that doesn't set you apart.

What if its for SMP programs. I did bad in some classes and I would like to juxtapose those bad grades with these distinctions to show how big of a turn-around I've made.

Your SMP courses are physics and chem? I was under the impression that SMP courses were like anatomy and stuff that you would take in med school...Like Ismet said, I wouldn't really focus on these.

Your chemistry prof telling you informally that you got the best grade is not an award. Listing that would make you look super desperate.

What about the physics invitation? I received an official letter from the physics department.

See, the thing is that at the end of the day, it makes me concerned that you would have to use these "letters" or whatever, as a means of buttressing your application, simply because it implies to me that your application does not have enough substance such that you would need to use this on your application.

Again, I would abstain. By putting things like that down, it will probably hurt you more than anything. If you REALLY want to make that recognition worth it to you, why don't you ask them for a letter of rec. Because that's how letters of rec are often done anyway, by convention: Do well in a class, prof can attest that, writes about it and supports you for med school. Think about it.

Again, grasping for straws.
