DO student here. Was recently accepted for an away rotation at a prestigious anesthesia program that I could see myself attending. The only down side is that it is from Oct 15 - Nov 15. When do anesthesia programs start interviewing potential residents? Worried that if I do the rotation this will cut into my interview time. Unfortunately no other times are available. Any advice greatly appreciated!

Most interview dates are from the end of October through the end of January (with a very small number in early October and the first week of February). You should be just fine scheduling around this time period. I wasn't able to schedule any interviews in November due to absurd requirements at my school, and I was still able to interview at every program that I wanted to.

Thanks so much for your help! How many programs did you interview at? Were you going on like 2-3 a week in December?

11 anesthesia and 5 or 6 prelims/TYs

In December I grouped a bunch in the same region together (4 interviews on a Thursday - Tuesday), and then 2 more on different weeks. There is typically a gap from Christmas through New Years where few if any programs interview (although I did find a place that I could interview on the 27th). It may have been possible to squeeze a few more in December, but it is nice to have a break and come home for a little bit before you hit the road again.

I had 8 interviews between October 15th and November 15th. But I tried to front load and I think that your away would likely take priority, as most of those interviews gave options in all other interview months.

I had 3 anesthesia and 3 prelims in december, but I took december off thinking that it would be easy to stack interviews that month. Not so. I have gotten a veritable plethora of emails from 3rd years wanting advice for anesthesia and I told them all to take November or January off.

Take it, it's early enough in the interview season that it won't affect your other offers. On the plus side, they'll likely interview you early since you're already there so you'll be ahead of the game at a place you're interested in.

You'll be fine if you do this away rotation. I couldn't schedule any interviews before November 10th or so, and I still managed to interview at over a dozen anesthesiology programs and a handful of prelims during the season.

At my former program, we started around October 1. I would go into your rotation, kick ass, meet as many people as you can and then ask for an interview before you leave in November. This is actually the thing I did.
