Hello, I'm starting second year of medical school and am curious about away rotations. When do you usually do away rotations? What schools offer them? How competitive is it to get into an away rotation? How long do they take? What does an away rotation entail (i.e. what do you do on an away rotation)? Are away rotations only done for competitive residencies? How many away rotations does a student usually do?

Thank you

Away rotations usually in the fourth year, sometimes third year. Most schools offer them, they are usually not that competitive to obtain. They are scheduled similarly to elective clerkships and thus take the same amount of time and you perform in the same way as the students at that school do. You can do away rotations for a variety of reasons, including scouting out a new geographic area where you may want to do your residency, etc., and thus are not reserved for people trying for competitive specialties. I'm not sure how many away rotations most students do, but they aren't required at most (all?) places and surely there are many students who never do one.
