I'm currently a 3rd year student trying to plan my 4th year, however i feel as though i get different responses concerning the benefit of doing away rotations...

Can anybody honestly say that doing an away rotation helped them match into their desired program? or did the opposite happen for anyone.

Here's what I can offer you:

1) I did not do any away rotations in peds and I still matched at my #1 choice and I got interviews to all but 2 places (out of 17 that I applied to).

2) A classmate of mine did an away rotation at her #1 choice, got an interview, got favorable feedback, and did not match anywhere. She had to scramble for a spot.

3) Other classmates did aways at their #1 choices and matched there.

The consensus that I've heard is that aways can help if you do really well, but they can hurt if you rub someone the wrong way, if you don't "fit in" to the program, or if you only do an "average job."

Hope this helps!
