Awesome Attitude

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am going to give half of my first paycheck to the government, in Taxes and paying back my student loans.

DDDSmack don't you have to give like a 1/4 of your check to the church?

I feel that people like the topic creator need to look back on their lives, and really wonder what went wrong. I dont get the point of announcing to everyone why they are better than everyone else like he so clearly did. I dont get why people have to look down on the poor, and think that they will be better off with your money. Your money is NOTHING... I say that because in the larger scheme of things, your money is not enough to even come close to making the world a better place.

If you want to donate, do so... But without going off and telling everyone that they are all a bunch of greedy villians. If you truly feel that way about everyone that applies to dental school, I would recommend you announce your feelings on the first day at whatever dental school would accept you.

Then you can go off and say that people dont like you because you "showed" them how greedy they are.

I take offense to your comments that we are in it for the money. I take offense that you feel that you are a better person than me because you are so eager to announce that your going to donate to charity. Words that bear absolutely no weight on an internet message board. How am I to know whether you will truly stick by your belief? How am I to know that you are not just saying that to justify calling us sincere pre-dental students a bunch of greedy thieves.

If you really want to make a difference, do something more helpful. Instead of wasting 4 years of your life, you could be spending your time somewhere (anywhere) helping people live better lives. If you think that money is the only way to accomplish this, then you are in the wrong profession.

why stop at half or your salary? too greedy for 3/4?

:luck: :luck:
Or, maybe ppl are upset because I am forcing them to look deep into who they are and it is scaring them. It does not matter what I say on this forum, in four years ppl from this site will be so full of themselves that it wont matter. It is a sad situation that someone becomes attacked because they make a positive decision about their money. Especially when the attacks are rooted from peoples feeling of resentment because my actions make them feel greedy.

I didnt start this thread to get praise, I assure you. Simply to make people think. Gain another perspective if you will. I will not be responding to any more threads posted on this. If there are further remarks, pm me. I will be glad to continue.

I feel the same way you do about helping others that are less fortunate. I learned the hard way that everyone has different intentions when it comes to practicing dentistry. Basically, I understand how the little things we do can impact the lives of others tremendously. However, I do not feel comfortable giving money right out of dental school. With time I would like to contribute to the community in other ways. Just my .08 cents :luck:

yeah, i'll donate all my profit too... that's very believable. Even if that's your intention, don't say that. To an adcom, it's sounds like BS.

You dont need to become a dentist to donate money...

I think that everyone can donate...now that I am not a dentist (yet) I still donate money all the time...so my point is that it dosnt matter how much uv got, all is matter is if ur willing to give (who u r!!)

the problem with the OPs argument is that he assumes helping the community means donating money. like Shuna, myself and countless others have said, we entered the dental field to provide healthcare to our community...this is what i plan to do and im sure everyone else here does as well. volunteering our service is how we, as dentist, give to the community. If money is the ultimate goal, than that is no longer dental related and such idealistic objectives can be accomplished in many other professions. Since the OP believes his community needs money, than thats fine for the OP. we each pick how to help out our community, so lets not judge one another for not sharing the exact same methods of doing so.

if you are going to donate your money, please donate it to something not created by McDonalds.....

anyways, i'm a person who sincerely stands behind everything listed in my personal statement and i plan to complete a MPH along with a DMD; my goal is to work in international dental public health...but who knows. i havent even gotten in yet. 😉
however, i'm a student who's come from eastern europe and realize the lack of dental care around the world which many others (not saying ignorant of) may not have been exposed to.
in the states, dentistry is a matter of conspicuous consumption, not necessarily health care.
i'm not talking about gold teeth, i'm talking about middle class and up who can afford to attach braces to their childrens jaws.
anyways, all i'm saying is that you can more often than not tell an individual's class status by the appearance of their teeth.

okay, point of story: props to you for being a giver, not a taker.

sorry, i'm done.

What does it mean to be a doctor of dental surgery/medicine? It means you are educated in and a practicioner of the art and science of dentistry. You are paid to practice your knowledge of the arts and science of dentistry to prevent, diagnose, and treat the conditions, diseases, and disorders of the oral cavity. As doctors in general, regardless of the area of focus, I believe we have a responsibility to our patients at not only a physical, but emotional level.

I truley believe that in order to be a good doctor to our patients, at both the physical and emotional level, we must truley be passionate about what we do.

I believe that in many cases we will be compensated based on how good of doctors we are. So basically if you are a good doctor, I see nothing wrong with making a pretty penny, as you deserve it.

Nothing ticks me off more than those however who want to become dentists simply for the money and lifestyle, but are not truely passionate about people or dentistry, and really have no idea what it means to be a doctor. These people just take up space and make it harder for those who are truelly passionate about this profession to get in.

I'll be the first to admit I don't have the grades at this second to get into dental school. That has to do with some other personal issues in my life and I am trying to get those things straightened out. But I will tell you, I have a passion and desire for people and dentistry that I truelly believe will one day allow me to be a great doctor of dentistry at both the physical and emotional level for my patients. And if I make 300k a year doing that, then great, I think I deserve it. I also am a big believer though in take what you need and give the rest to others. How you do that though is up to you. Heck if you make good money pay your employees well, give them christmas bonuses, and get them the super dooper awesome insurance package. Sponser local sports teams. Pay for your neices and nephews, and eventual grandchildren to go to college. Do what ever makes you happy, but do it because it makes you happy, not for attention or kudos.

Anyways, that's my philosophy on this topic.
