I have done shadowing before and I have shadowed MANY different physicians in various medical fields, however, recently I found a new person to shadow within a field I have never shadowed in before.

After I landed the shadowing opportunity and before showing up to shadow, I researched the physician and found out SOOO many awesome things that literally made me nervous to show up and VERY nervous to even talk when I got there.

A few things I found out:
1. This physician was inducted as physician of the YEAR over all states in America
2. This physician has received MANY INTERNATIONAL awards for outstanding medical work
3. This physician serves on the Dean's Board of one of the schools i am CURRENTLY APPLYING TO!!
4. This physician is an officer of a Nationwide Medical Board
5. While sitting in this physician's office a news channel in Ireland called to schedule an interview
6. A handful of nationally known news channels have come down to interview this physician and staff and do a "day in the life of"
7. the physician partner just came from Africa and was a major person there re: healthcare and he let me spend almost half the day with him too..
8. this physician is a preceptor for several medical schools

OMG.. BEST SHADOWING EXPERIENCE EVER!!!!!
I spent the ENTIRED day with this physician and her partner starting at 5am and I left at 6pm (both clinic and hospital) but they were STILL going! They had to go BACK to the hospital because they had new admits and asked if I wanted to come.. but silly me.. i wore heels (even though they were small they wore my feet owwt.. They told me next time do not wear heels lol ))

So excited to go back tomorrow!!

Just wanted to share with all my SDNers and hope your future shadow experiences (in med school and pre-med school) will be as good as this one was. 🙂

I had an experience similar to that. I have shadowed this doctor for hundreds of hours since 2010. He lets his students see a lot of hand on stuff and used to let us come see surgeries in scrubs and be right next to an open body. Depending on the magnitude of the surgery sometimes he would let me stand there the whole time or I was told to step back and learn about the machines being used. He's an adcom for a low tier MD school. Young successful surgeon (early 40s) from a top 10 med school (he had a 3.7/36, this was back in like the 90s). He's arguably the best surgeon for his speciality in my region if not state. He's also one of the first people who taught me about DO schools and he always liked their philosophy. He told one of his students (there was one summer where I researched with him in high school) who was applying to med schools to go to a DO over a carribbean any day. Student got into a MD but almost turned it down for her top DO.

Thanks for sharing that! He sounds awesome.. love physicians that are like that 🙂

I had a similar experience. He was sure to grill me on why I wanted to be a doctor and encouraged me to learn more about osteopathic medicine. Took me on a ton of different procedures. Told me how he ended up being a DO. Wrote a standout letter for me, a copy of which still hangs in my living room.
