waitlisted for interview...

the pessimist in me thinks this is just a kind way to reject me

however,

the optimist in me is really happy that it's NOT a rejection!

Not necessarily a rejection unless you do nothing about it. If you make significant application-progress (get new grades, new MCAT, new publication, etc.), send an update letter and you'll increase your chances of receiving an interview (it can and does happen).

Very excited for my interview on Oct. 13. AZCOM seems to have everything I want in a school.

Anyone else staying at the Drury Inn on the 12th? Supposedly they have free dinner/booze as well as a shuttle to campus.

Got my interview invite this morning. Checklist was complete 9/2. It seems there is a pattern of exactly three weeks from the time the app is complete. First available was Jan 12. 😕

Last year I interviewed at the end of April and was waitlisted. I suppose interviewing in Jan is a bit of an improvement.

I interviewed at the end of January last year and people were still being accepted in swarms for the entire month after, so you're definitely in good shape with a 1/12 interview. If you want to try to get an earlier interview just keep checking the portal religiously and somebody is bound to drop an interview. Best of luck. 👍

Just got an interview for January! I have a few questions!!!!
- What is the general outlook (acceptance rate) for January interviewees?
- What is the outline of the interview panel? Breezy or nerve-racking and difficult?
- Knowing that my interview is January can any of you give me any suggestions on how I should start preparing?

Thank you guys!

Congrats!
The answers to all of your questions are pretty much covered in every post on this page and the middle-bottom of page 6 as all of the information presented there is still pretty applicable. So reading all of that is definitely my first suggestion for preparing. Aside from that: sdn interview feedback page, AZCOM catalog (be familiar with it, love it, sleep with it, dream about it; not really, but it's good to be familiar with), have somebody mock interview you if you're not comfortable with the whole interview process, etc.

On that note, it's off to clinical medicine (by far the best class in first year).

Hey good luck man, returning waitlister here..... Interviewed on Tuesday.

Unfortunately for me I think my interview went way better last year, walked away thinking it was fun. This year was different. Although I think I nailed all the questions, I really felt grilled in an interview everyone else said was fun and relaxed, makes me uneasy.

I totally agree with Randomusername, I interviewed Monday April 19th last year and we were told the committee wouldn't meet until Friday and we would find out the next week. People started posting acceptances that Wednesday on SDN, I called and was told they did meet already and I got waitlisted.....

If you look at last year's thread and the year before a couple people found out real early, but most found out on Oct. 1st and 2nd. I expect it will be the same this year.

Once again good luck to everyone, especially to those re-applicants.....

I just got to Phoenix and for anyone that has an interview in the future check out Priceline. I bid $33 on a 3*, which turned out to be about 43 with taxes and fees and got the Crowne Plaza on Peoria.

Room is pretty big, free internet, indoor pool, gym, etc. Pretty solid all around for the price.

Going to study up on some interview questions, re-read my application and review some information about the school. Hoping for the best tomorrow. Knowing what I already do and based on friend's opinions who are attending this is definitely in the top tier of schools.

Is it common to receive an invitation to interview 3 days after sending in the Secondary?

Interview went well (I think). I <3 AZCOM so we shall see what happens.

Haha, you "heart" it... 😉 Cute. I loved it too. Lucky you, you will find out by the end of the week I think! Is that what they told you? I need to know ASAP because I have an interview next Monday and Friday, Oct 4th and 8th... I have not even bought plane tickets or looked into hotels yet for those interviews... I am putting it off because getting an acceptance to AZCOM will mean I can cancel those interviews... I feel like I am playing with fire right now. Either I am crazy and naive, or I am saving myself a lot of time and money. Not sure yet.

Yay! That's great to hear. Did you get asked about kitchen appliances? 😀 Haha

No ahah other people did though. I didn't get anything too difficult. It was actually pretty standard, most of them I had prepped for a bit.

Haha ya, AZCOM is definitely my top school thus far. It is made even better by the fact that they told us that since we are early in the cycle if we get accepted we have our choice of 3rd year rotation spots. Knowing before attending would be so amazing.

I have an interview on Tuesday 10/5 so I feel ya on wanting to hear back soon!! I already booked flights because there is no way I can make it if I don't have those flights but worst case senario I cancel them (Southwest) and I can use the funds to fly somewhere else another time, or even to go visit AZCOM later in the year

What they told us is that it will be 2-3 weeks, but that is what they tell everyone. They said that the fastest way to find out is to watch your portal, yay.. haha They said that they meet at the end of every month and that Monday/Tuesday are the last interviews for this month. They then have to find a time to meet and discuss the 100 or so applicants that they have interviewed. Potentially, we could find out on Friday. I'd assume that they want to have this group done being discussed before the next group starts.

I'm praying, I really want this acceptance.

Maybe I should use your strategy and buy the tickets with insurance on them or something so I can cancel and use them later for somewhere else. The coolest thing about my interview on Oct 8th is its at SOMA, in Mesa… So I can go back to Phoenix and see AZCOM again! Hopefully with the ability to look at apartments because I will have an acceptance in hand… Knock on wood. Haha.

They didn’t tell us we would get to choose our site since we interviewed early! That is awesome!!! My friend that goes to AZCOM told me to call them on Wednesday next week and just tell them that I want to hear what my status is… She said she did it before the time they told her they would meet, and they went ahead and told her that she was accepted. Not sure if I want to say that I want to know so I can stop wasting my time on other schools, but I don’t think they will hate me for just calling and asking my status. Hmmm… If I am waitlisted, I will be crushed.

I have my interview during the 2nd week of October and the more I here you guys talk about your experience, the more I hope I get in!

In terms of choosing your clinical rotations, I have glanced at them. Do you think I should know a little bit about them before my interview? Or do you mean that early interviewers get first dibs??

They didn't say we could actually choose the rotation site but the question came up. The answer was "well they are assigned but we ask your preference and since its early in the cycle, everything is still open" which basically sounds like "we will let you pick at this point but its not going to last long" I may call on Thursday and ask and tell them I have an interview on Tuesday that I would like to drop pending their decision. We'll see

Dan, did they give you any more info about the rotation sites?

I'd honestly have no idea which one to pick. Other than they said Modesto is starting ortho residencies, which I don't have an interest in...

Any current students in E or W Phoenix, Los Angeles, Ohio, etc... to comment?

I just hope I get in and I'll just dart board it if I have to 😛

Edit: Am I too worried about this? Does it truly matter where you do your rotations as long as you can do your elective rotations anywhere you want?

What the 2014 class has been told is that your third year rotation (core rotations) location doesn't really matter as it's more of a "where would you prefer to live?" thing than a "where would you get the best educational experience at?" kind of thing. While I do believe that, in general, the overall educational experience will be about the same whether you're in E or W Phoenix, Tucson, Turlock/Modesto, LA, Ohio, or Indiana, the overall opportunities and potential benefits of each location do differ (though bear in mind, as previously mentioned, EVERYBODY gets a ward-based IM rotation and the other ward-rotations are assigned by department heads and it doesn't matter where you're located, if you want that rotation and they decide to let you do it you will be able to do it, even if it means traveling back to AZ from CA or OH). For instance, the Ohio rotations are located in the CORE program which has a slew of osteopathic residencies (pretty much if there's a residency for it, CORE likely has a program for it) which would be quite useful if you're gunning for something competitive and don't care if you do a DO or MD residency, so long as you just get that field. Or, for instance, Tucson has U of A's medical center which comes with its own advantages too. So choosing your rotation site is a significant decision to put thought into, but you also have the sweet release of fourth year in which your rotational life is much more in your hands due to all of the allocated elective/audition rotation time.

I've got to agree with Randomusername. I think its more of a where would you like to live deal. I doubt that there will be a significant difference in the education level of any program. For me, I would love to be able to live back in LA for my 3rd year having lived/gone to school there for so long. Your 4th year and the auditions are the big deal. That said, they did say that they would send you more information about the rotation sites when you get accepted.

Speaking of living in California, we were also told that they WOULD adjust your COA if you decide to rotate in California, so you don't have to worry about not receiving enough loan money (just having more loan money to pay back😉).

 Ya, I'd assume they would. It would suck to have extra money to pay back but whatever. Being able to spend time w/ my 6 year old brother, who would then be 8, is much more important to me 👍

I interview on Monday.

Super stoked! 😀 Good luck to everyone!

Does anyone know which hospitals are included in each area? I am from the phoenix area and would like to know how the hospitals are split up. Which hospitals are included in E Phoenix, W Phoenix, and Tucson?

Thanks

I can't tell you for sure right now regarding East vs. West Phoenix, but I'm going to wager a semi-secure guess that the Tucson-region will, in general, consist of what it has in recent years. For that, if you're realllllly interested, I'm betting they're the same as listed under Tucson here: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=13795&d=1257963853. REMEMBER these are NOT the current rotation regions but are the old regions. I will try and get an updated list of stuff posted for y'all when we are finally told what cities and hospitals are tied to which regions, which should be occurring within the next week or two.

@randomusername and Dan, thanks guys - your posts were super informative. And thanks for that pdf. Your answers were just what I was looking for 🙂

Called Admissions this morning to ask if I could still update my app before it's reviewed; lady said yes because she's pretty sure they're reviewing files on Thursday or Friday. :xf:

Also, Flushot, thanks for the list of rotation sites. That's incredibly helpful!!

Wow, we don't find out until Friday? I thought the adcom was meeting today for some reason... I guess the portal is supposed to update first anyways

This is going to sound insane, but September 24th was my Son's birthday and for some reason I was thinking "I think DbDan interviews at AZCOM today."

So good omen for you coming from me.

😱 damn, I've gotten into people's heads that much.. crazy! haha

Thanks though! Hopefully we'll find out soon. Honestly it can't come soon enough.

SEDaniel, the Adcoms aren't supposed to meet until after the interviews for this week are done. I think the last interviews were today and tomorrow. I was thinking they'd meet Wednesday but if the office thinks thurs/fri than at least its coming this week!

Must... be able... to join... FB group...

Waitlist/rejection will be just a little more sucky now lol

reading all of this page, I'm so freaking excited to hear back from this school soon!!!

i feel ya, i cant stop thinking about this school 😍 i would hate to not get accepted :scared:

I keep telling myself to not get too excited (not working) or get my hopes up (also not working)

I've already been looking at apartments and jobs for the Spring before class starts lol

Why do I have a feeling this will end horribly

Relax...... You're getting ME nervous 🙂

If you want a good laugh, look at last year's thread and see what a neurotic mess I was while on the wait list...... this is nothing 🙂

 After the letdowns of the last 2 years I'm not getting my hopes up. Don't get me wrong, if I get accepted I'll be jumping off the walls excited but at this point I'm never confident coming out of interviews even if I think they went well. Regardless though I'm still praying for acceptance!!!!! 👍

Boom! Headshot! I got it, too 👍

First acceptance...I guess I'm going to be a doctor after all 😱

[EDIT]Just the 4 of us? Where are the rest of you!
