AZCOM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

Ya I stumbled upon that and its part of what made me regret having picked LA as my #1 choice. Level 2 center isn't terrible but the ratings of that hospital are horrific if you look on any review. They also have almost no residency programs. I dunno. I may call and ask if I can change it but for me I really want to be back in LA after I'm done w/ school so I feel like being there for rotations will help that.

There was also a link to a google maps earlier in the thread that showed more than just the one hospital in AZCOM's LA rotation. It'd be nice if the packet they sent us had information on which hospitals are included in the regions and such rather than just a single piece of paper asking us to rank them.

Hi Dan, I believe there are two other sheets that came with the ranking sheet. Those 2 sheets gave you the information about what hospital is in each region as well as the website of each hospital. In LA, we have Lakewood regional medical center, fountain valley hospital, long beach memorial hospital center (which is very good), St. Mary medical center....there are total 10 hospitals in LA region and those are very solid sites. I don't know why you did not receive those sheets. They just added those hospitals this year and hope they will keep the same lists by the time we rotate:xf:

I think LA is not a bad choice compared to other sites especially if you have family living close by.

👍 Thanks for that. I'll have to search around and see if I can find that sheet. I don't remember getting it though. My envelope was super thin and only had my acceptance letter and the sheet to e-mail Dr. Speicher I believe.

I found the google maps with all of the rotation sites too so that helped out a bit. I love LA, went to school there, etc. so when I found out that I could be back after 2 years I jumped at the opportunity. Like I said, if they are offering those positions, they obviously have reason to believe they will prepare us well.

I can't speak for LA, but I can speak for Arizona because I'm more familiar with the place. I stated this in another thread and christine can attest to that but, anyway...

Banner Health owns and operates Arizona in more ways than you can imagine. If Banner falls - everybody falls. They do well because they are a good network of hospitals and they employ very good physician's groups. If you rotate at a Banner facility, you will be more than pleased. Any one of them.

Hey thanks for that!! Do you know anything about Maricopa or any of the other Rural Arizona sites?

"The Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine hereby offers to admit Jinobi as a candidate for the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, Class of 2015 commencing in the Fall Term of 2011 with the total credit hours of 249.4 subject to the terms and conditions set forth herein."

Accepted AZCOM 2015! I don't know whether these acceptances are going in waves, but it's worth a shot to check it out. 😀

Congrats!! I'm jealous!

Anyone else??

I'm jealous too! I was in the same interview block and I haven't heard anything yet either. I've been checking the portal all day.... Hope to hear something soon!

My portal hasn't changed and I interviewed on the 3rd... almost gave me a heart attack that jinobi got in already. I just called and was told that they haven't made a decision on my application one way or another and confirmed that the committee would be meeting sometime this week to make that decision. Maybe Jinobi was let in automatically based on high stats... do they do that?

Keep hoping! PDX...any chance you're a mother who likes banging kitchen counters with a sledgehammer?

Indeed, the same...went back at it yesterday and now we are down to studs and asbestos tile. lol

According to a friend in admissions they do sometimes fast track certain applicants that have a high gpa and 28 or greater MCAT and do well in interview. That is probably what happened. Committee meets tomorrow so I think most of us that interviewed this past week (11/2 for me) should see something on the portal tomorrow evening or Wednesday morning.

I'm in the same boat. I thought that having grown up in SoCal, it would be nice to do rotations here, especially if I want to come back after school. So I picked LA as number 1...but now I'm really confused. I already sent a clarification email regarding my choices once, so I don't think I could send another one. And honestly, I feel like its hard to really rank the regions based on the hospitals there without really living there, so I'm not sure about the Phoenix ones either. This is confusing! Like you said, I'm just hoping that all the rotation sites are good, otherwise they wouldn't have offered them. :xf:

I'm not exactly sure what it is – fast track or not – but when I interviewed, I heard that the interviewers ranks the "best" in each group and those people hear back first. For the rest, they're taking more time to look over your file. Don't worry if someone who interviewed after you gets accepted before you. In the following week, many people will hear back. Good luck!

Well I'm glad if someone was going to get in it was you. Its weird finding out what all your student doctor names are. I was the guy from NC. Anyone else from our little table on here?

Hey there! That is very kind of you to say. Thank you! Unfortunately, I am one of the ones who is still waiting on pins and needles. 🙂 I enjoyed our table at lunch and would be happy to have the opportunity to come to class with everyone who was there. :luck::luck::luck:

Has anyone heard anything about acceptances today?

My portal just changed!!! ACCEPTED!

Interviewed Nov 2, I was the only Canadian for anyone else on that day. I talked to all of you I'm sure so if you're on here drop me a line and say hi!!

See you all in August. Good luck to everyone else!

That's what mine says too I'm assuming it means we're in.

Yeah I remember you. We talked for a while about India and taking photos.

Nothing yet for me.... Should I start to get worried...

There's always a decent chance of hearing within a couple of weeks still (though our forthcoming two week break will likely throw that out of whack significantly). You can always call to check on your status also.

Congrats to everybody that's gotten in!

Also, since it's not been plugged lately, here's the Facebook page for any of you FB junkies out there:

Nope, I'm gonna call admissions and ask tomorrow I don't think I can do another day like this. I'm fairly sure I logged on the portal at least 50 times today. Maybe tomorrow is my lucky day :xf:

Okay, so we've jumped one hurdle. Now on to rotations. I've researched the rotation sites somewhat extensively and know what my top three would be. Is there someone I can contact and notify of my choice before I get my letter in the mail? I've read this entire thread at least a few times, but don't remember seeing an answer to this.

Not really... You should get a form in your packet and then fill it out and turn it in. However, I did see a few people on here just say they emailed their choices directly in the email. Though, I would want to make sure I filled out the form they sent and had a hard copy of what I sent them. But that is just me... Makes it more official I think...

Woo hoo... just got the call!!! I have been accepted OFF WAITLIST!!! 😀

Well I just got off the phone with admissions and I'm on the waitlist. Nothing to do now but to wait and see.

EDIT: Odd timing mdang86, how long were you on the waitlist before you heard back?

As Noshie said, you'd want to wait until you get the official acceptance packet. It has an "official" sheet for you to list your preferred rotation sites. I emailed them to Dr. Speicher and told him I would fax the form to him too. He said it's not necessary as the email is just fine.

Congrats! Just out of curiosity, did you send additional LORs or a letter of intent etc.? I was wait-listed last year and always wondered if there was something I could have done differently to get accepted sooner.

Also, thanks to Noshie and ND10 for answering my question. This whole process has been a huge exercise in patience, so I suppose it won't kill me to wait a few more days to submit my rotation preference. :ninja:

Crap! Sorry to hear.

I'm going to call about mine too, if my portal doesn't change any time soon.

I interviewed on the very first day of the season 09/17 and found out at the end of September that I was waitlisted. They told me that I should keep updating them to let them know that I'm still interested. However, I didn't do all that yet since it's still a little on the early side in the cycle and they told me they won't be looking at my file again till March/April/May. This is really unexpected that they called me today and let me know I was accepted. I have not received any email yet but I checked the portal and the accepted list is there. To those who are waitlisted, don't lose hope :luck:!!!!

Damn! We will keep our fingers crossed for you!!

Sorry if I failed to see it in past posts, but has anyone heard which rotation site they were given yet? I sent my preference sheet in a week or two ago and haven't heard anything, so I was just wondering if there was any sort of known time frame. Thanks!

Hello AZCOMer's,

I read some of the post's recently and some of you are concerned about which rotation regions are better for residency, etc. I want to clarify this for everyone. AZCOM third year rotations are preceptor based, what does that mean? It means that you rotate (for each rotation like surgery, peds, obgyn, etc.) with a chosen preceptor. What this does not mean is what hospital you will be rotating at. You will be primarily with your chosen preceptor and if they happen to have patients at a nearby hospital then you will see those patients at that hospital, otherwise you will be with that preceptor at his/her clinic. Also, it does not matter if you, for residency, did your third/fourth year rotations in that same region. The only thing that would matter is if you were interested in peds and you did a third year and fourth year rotation within that same department and then applied for residency in that same department that you did third and fourth year rotations. Otherwise your fourth year is where you do audition rotations at places with residency programs so you can see if you like it there and they (the residency coordinators, attendings, residents, etc.) can see if they like you. So choose your third year based on what area/climate you wouldn't mind living in. I choose LA because I'm from Texas so why not live in LA for two years. But the bottom line about third and fourth year rotations is it doesn't matter where you rotate, all that matters is how well YOU do as a medical student and what your preceptors thank about you for recommendations, etc. Clear as mud? If you have any questions about any of this feel free to pm me. Good luck to everyone and hopefully I'll see you guys next year!

has anyone received their rotation site assignments yet? I sent mine in over a month ago, and last week Dr. Speicher told me over the phone that I'd be receiving it early this week, but nothing yet as of tonight. if i get one of the Phoenix sites, my wife and I are probably buying a house baby! finally i can get a dog haha.
