My wife and I are wondering what other married students are doing for housing in AZ. We noticed that the housing market is not too expensive, but we don't know the area. What areas should we avoid, and what are best for a family? My wife would also like to live near other AZPOD families (possibly in the same ward).

Well, my wife and I are living across the street from the school in an apartment complex, but you're right, the market in Phoenix is pretty soft right now; buying a house might be a good idea. From what I can tell and what I have been told, the whole area around the school is really nice. The houses in the area are still out of our price range (I think the cheapest we saw in the neighborhood was around 250k) but that is still way cheaper than the 500k it would have gone for at the peak of the market.

we would like to find a house no more than 10 to 15 miles from the school, our price range is around $100-115K. we would like three bedrooms and a garage.

If someone will loan you the money it might be a good time to buy a house. There are a ton around campus between 150,000 and 225,000. They were going for 300,000+ when i started a couple of years ago. Then 4th year you might be able to rent it out. But about 10 miles away you can find some on 89th and about indian school between 100 and 150, but that area is not as nice with a little more crime.

we were looking online at one just off of 91st right by cardinal stadium and a couple others in Peoria. Any Idea what these areas are like? one concern with the one by the stadium is traffic and noise. In the picture of the house you can see the stadium in the background. but the neighborhood is not too old the house of interest was built in 94 it is directly east, and backs up to 91st. the homes in Peoria are a little older but I have heard good things about it.

There are also some nice areas to be found in Phoenix, but you'll probably have to take your time and scout them out. With the market the way it is, you should be able to find a good realtor who will only show you houses in your price range in quality neighborhoods.

If you go east towards Scottsdale and Paradise Valley, I doubt you'd find anything in your price range.
