Has AZPOD increased their scholarship offerings within the past year or two? After reading other threads, it appears the scholarship offerings through this school are extremely limited!

From what I understand, AZPod and Western are still relatively new (Western especially) so they have not had the chance to develop and distribute significant scholarships for their students.

I called AZPOD about three months ago, and they said they offer no merit based scholarships and would only offer one if you REALLY stood out in something like community service.

I understand what you're saying an its probably true, but you would almost think the opposite would be true. They would want to offer really good scholarships to qualified applicants to attract a better class if students, otherwise, most new schools have really bad stats, typically. A gas station just opened up down the street, and they've given away so much free stuff in the last two weeks its ridiculous. They are taking a loss so that you see how nice it is, etc etc. I can only imagine the same strategy would work in school admissions, but who knows.

The only problem with your thinking is that schools get money for scholarships largely from donations made by alumni. AZPod has had only 2 classes of students finish residency training now (total of maybe 30 graduates), so I can't imagine that they are donating huge sums of money to the program. Same goes for Western. They may get some funds from the University or other donors, but funds typically come from alumni donations. I am halfway through my first year of residency training, and I have already received solicitations for donations, so AZPod is actively trying to get those funds for scholarships.

Borrow borrow borrow! As my good friend always says, "sometimes you gotta spend money to make money."

Maxillofacial, how come you are doing podiatry if your name is 'Maxillofacial'?

I am surprised at the lack of scholarships at AZPOD. Western, another new program, offers scholarships to incoming pod students.

As said where is the money coming from, they have very few classes, western yet has any attendings. No bank is going to lend money for this sort of thing

Exactly how the Dean explained it to me during my interview. The way I understand it, work hard during your first couple of years (or rather perform well) and you've got scholarship opportunities heading your way wherever you are.

Remember to pay attention to the qualifiers to maintain scholarships. The schools I interviewed at require you to maintain a very high GPA to guarantee an extension of a scholarship after the first year. One school, for example, requires you to maintain a 4.0 for their highest scholarship to carry on past year one.
