Looking at SDN I noticed allot more people viewing in the early morning than in the late nights. So I started thinking? Are most people here (premeds) morning people or night people? Personally I hate waking up early 🙁 . I can hang out all night (most of which I attribute to college). Do you think the habbit of being a person who goes to sleep early and wakes up early will help you in med school? Or will us night owls have an adavantage in studying late and being up at all hours for intership and residency?

Basiclly should I change by sleeping habits before med school (4 months!) or live with what I am, a late night owl? 😕

Last semester I discovered the secret to (my) success.... Working ahead so that I could get 8 hours of sleep before my finals. I have always been the up-all-night cramming type personality, but with science classes I have noticed that you can't win this way. I also like to wake up early to finish my homework assignments. I think I am much more efficient this way.

I think our late night skills will come in handy during rotations and residency. I'm hoping that my real-world work experience will pay off as well...

Of course, it all depends on what works best for you.

I think probably most people on SDN are night owls who wake up early? The options don't have to be mutually exclusive :X

If you hoot with the owls, you wont be able to soar with the eagles.

Of course, I would never know, I absolutely hate waking up in the morning

😴 😴 😴 👍

My schedule at the moment has me waking up at 6:45 am every morning going to school until 2 then working from 3-11pm. Usually I don't go to sleep until 1-2 am.

I am a junior undergrad right now, so I am hoping this experience will prepare me somewhat for what is ahead.

Unfortunately for us. Can't wait to quit this job and get some solid sleep!

Did you think about the time zone difference?..I kind of thought it was the reverse - ie more people late at night - when it seems like the West Coast people settle in at night there is a lot of posts (or maybe since I am most interested in the threads about the UCs, I notice it then). Ironic that I am posting this message at 8am though.

This is me. I hate getting up in the morning, but I do it anyway.

I have also wondered about working on changing my sleeping habits before med school. I haven't decided yet. My up all night ways certainly didn't hurt me for undergrad.

Night owl for sure. Waking up when I'm not ready to just makes me very sad.

BUT if I need to I can go a few days (like the 3 days before mycology/tumor bio tests back to back in the same day) going to sleep at 5 and waking up at 6.

After the test I crash, obviously, but I think you just do what is necessary to reach your goal. Hopefully this will work during rotations too 🙂

LOL. This semester, none of my classes start before noon. Therefore, I can go to bed at up to 2AM and still get 8 hours of sleep. It's not bad. Unfortunately, I've been getting less than 8 in the past few days, due to poor time management.

my earliest class this year is 11:40, so that just means a lot of sleeping. I have no incentive to wake up early this semester. Take for example today, my first class is at 3:30 and i have nothing to do until then so i slept at 2.

During undergrad I'd go for weeks working until 2am and getting up in time for 8am classes. I used to be more of a night owl, and it's still real easy for me to stay up until 1am. Nowadays I am an early riser so I can work mornings and have most of my afternoons open.

It may also seem as though there are lots of people with weird hours because of the difference in time zones. For example, someone may be online at 9 am on the Eastern time zone, but to someone on the Pacific time zone, it looks like that person is on at 6 am.

I don't know what it is, but I can't stay up late for the life of me...I'm usually in bed by 11:30 or 12 on weekdays. I wake up around 8 on most mornings. I'm a real light sleeper, the slightest sound wakes me up and it takes me forever to fall asleep. None of which bodes well for med school/residency sleeping patterns...

I can totally relate to that. During undergrad I could go for a few days waking @ 5am and then staying up till 1am. But I know this will not be able to be maintained in med school.

Wake at 5:30-6am...sleep around 11, 12 at the latest (unless its a weekend)

Night owl for sure. I'm convinced that I think much better at around midnight that I ever do at 8am.

how is this not a poll? definitely up all night.

Bed at 10:30 on weeknights, wake up at 6:00 am. But if I don't get that much sleep, I'm impossible to live with.

It is near impossible for me to go to bed before 3 or 4 am....i'm one of those stupid people who is convinced they'll fail all their classes if i don't sacrifice sleep time for study time. i get this weird sense of confidence if i study all night before an exam. irrational thing is half the time i'm up at night i'm goofing off with my roommates. however i usually am up by 8 am.

Morning Person and Caffeine Enthusiast.

I can wake up at 5am no problem (well, with coffee no problem). Let's all say it together, my friends: Peets Coffee. This stuff is a miracle drug. I'm not sure how my kidneys feel about it.

Staying up past 11pm really hurts unless I'm doing something really cool and it involves someone else who might be singing, dancing, drunk, or naked - or all of the above, and not necessarily in that order.

ha ha i did that last night.

Not making fun of you- I just had a friend send this and it's pretty funny:

Darn it. Can SOMEONE PLEASE PM me about how to upload an image that's not a thumbnail size? Pretty please? I'm from that group that just missed all of the requisite computer classes (28, but my sister's 25 and she can do web design- it was required in her high school years, but not for me!). ARGH! 😱

I am definately more of a night person. It's easier for me to focus and study at night, and I have no problem staying up all night while getting up early is SUCH an effort. However, I've been stuck with early-morning classes since my junior year, so I've had to adapt. That's what sucks about having only a few sections offered on some of the required courses.

I also noticed what the original poster said about the time.

It might have something to do with East/West coast. Time are posted in West Coast time. At 8 AM in New York, we all see 5AM. That's early.

I could be wrong about all this though.

I am definately a night person.
