So this is my first post here, but one that needs advice!

O Chem is hard for me. As it stands, I got a C on my first exam, and a B- on the second exam. There's only 1 midterm left, and 1 final. After speaking with the professor, a B- is the best case scenario.

Considering my other postbac chemistry grades of B- and B- (when I was still working), should I withdraw from ochem and retake it next semester?

Please help!

TIA

Hell no...OChem is a tough subject, so a (B) in the class is respectable....The last thing you want to do is withdraw and do all those reactions ALL OVER AGAIN....If you pull off a B+ on both midterm/final you'll be golden...

I made a (B) in both OChem1 and OChem2.....Never had problems getting dental school & podiatry school interviews......

You're good!...Just stay wary of those C's !!!

Are you aiming to go to med school? PA program? Dental school? Depending on where you are trying to go, the GPA requirements/expectations will differ. A few B- aren't going to kill you, although it certainly can not be a trend. All B-s would be a 2.7 GPA, which wont really fly for any health professions program. If you have a lot of other coures you did well in that will raise your GPA, then you will be fine. I had multiple Bs, a B+, and a B- on my transcript and I did fine. If you think can pull of a B or B-, I'd say stay wit it. Any questions, feel free to PM me.

Withdrawing and restarting are not good options for you. Depending on how many classes you have to go and if you are doing uGPA "damage control" will largely govern how many grades of B- you can afford. Since you already have 2, try to figure out how to do well on your remaining tests and get at least a B in this course regardless of what the professor says. I find it difficult to believe that getting As on the two remaining tests with one being a final, that a B- is the best that you can hope for. Down the line, you will NEED a couple of As so figure out where those are going to come. Since you are not working, your chances of getting a couple of As in some of your remaining coursework are certainly pretty good.

Thanks for the info guys. I'll stick it out and work my ***** off for the remaining two tests.

A B in OCHEM is fine.........just get through it. not sure which direction you are going for school, but the entrance tests (MCAT for med school) are far more important.

O Chem is the weed out class. Besides, starting over will still probably not help. It is mind numbing none the less.

The non trad high school science teacher in my class gave me to pieces of advice
1.)Think like a molecule (?)
2.)Carbon ALWAYS makes four bonds.

Get through it and you will be fine IMHO.

B- is nothing man. I got a C in my third quarter of organic chemistry and in biochemistry.

But I definitely wouldn't recommend it.

Hmmm...
I think in this situation I would just study really, really, really hard and try to pull up the grade. Be sure to go to help/TA sessions if you find it's helpful. It seems like you should be able to do better than a B- (like maybe B at least?!) if you ace the last 2 exams. I actually got a B in 1st semester organic chem (after getting 69 on the first exam...aack! ....but then got 88, then 90-somethings after that), but an A in 2nd semester organic chem. So maybe it will click for you at some point. I was totally thinking of dropping organic chem after that first bad grade, but my professor basically just told me to study a lot more, which I did, and it worked. I had almost all A's in science classes other than orgo...I had no problems getting in to an MD school. You really do need to try to avoid all grades lower than B+ though...that can really ruin your GPA.
Does the class have a lab component that you can use to pull up your grade?
Good luck!

Orgo is a class that sucks for a lot of people.
There are some threads around about studying for Orgo which may help.
My basic strategy was to just do as many problems as possible.
I basically did EVERY problem in my text and then some.
Why? That was the only way I could make the stuff stick in my head.

I wouldn't drop if you feel you will get a B-. Just work on doing the best you can and improving your grades in the future.

Yeah, it's been a while since I took organic. I think to just study a lot of reactions, and probably study any and all reactions shown/lectured about in class, was what I did that finally helped. After a while your brain starts to recognize which things go to which...reaction-wise. That's why when I was doing poorly I just started studying a couple more hours/day...easier to do if you are a traditional undergrad and don't have a real job.
