Hello! I understand this is going to sound pretentious and ignorant, but I truly am confused as to my next steps. I need help and I really do appreciate y’all’s advice.

My current GPA is a 3.94. I had a 3.991 prior to taking my Sociology class, that I received a B+ in due to a screwup on the TA’s part. Normally, I wouldn’t be upset. But my GPA has now gone sub 3.95 due to a grade that I do not deserve in a class that I truly did not have trouble with. My school has a grade replacement policy where retaking a class allows you to completely replace the prior grade. I do not know how AMCAS looks upon grade replacements, and was wondering if this is something I could do? Or, would it reflect poorly upon me that I decided to grade replace a B+?

It was a goal of mine to graduate at the top of my class, and while I am not upset about my current GPA, it hurts to see that taken from me for an unfounded reason. Thank you!

Do you mean they entered the wrong grade? If so, ask if they can fix it.

If you earned a B+, it’s fine. I got a B+ in sociology, too.

Well, not exactly. Our TA graded by a harsher rubric than our professor intended but our professor refused to fix it. And it’s not really the B+ in sociology that’s bothering me (it’s a perfectly fine grade!). It’s just that I had a near 4.0 prior to receiving it and now have lost something I worked very hard for due to a very random fluctuation.

It’s not all-or-nothing. You will still have a very high GPA to show for your hard work.

These “random fluctuations” happen. Sometimes there are multiple professors that teach the same course and one is known for being a harsher grader than the others.

This doesn’t sound like a “screwup on the TAs part”, this is just you getting a B+. Either way it doesn’t matter, no one cares if your gpa drops by .04

But to answer your primary question no, amcas doesn’t do grade replacement. They will factor in all attempts in calculating your gpa so for the love of god do not retake a b+..or do and watch your future interviewer stare at you in disbelief as you attempt to rationalize why you took an intro sociology course twice

Retaking this class will probably hurt you more than it can help you. Once you get above a 3.9, schools know you are extremely competitive and will start to look at other indicators of success.

Word. I was being an idiot. See what I mean -- I need yall's advice to stay sane. Thank you.

Perfect is the enemy of good.

Perfectionism is a barrier to resilience.

Now you are not gonna get into med school... what are you gonna do with your life???
If i am the adcom of a med school, I would be wary of these types of applicants.. its really obvious after a first few interview questions.

You want to retake a B+ because you want a 4.0 THAT badly? 🤔 Lmao.... nobody's perfect, I hope when you get that 520 MCAT score you don't feel the need to retake it cuz "I didn't get the anticipated 528, my life is ruined!!!". This perfectionist mindset has got to go.

Does you parents know? I am still mad about my son getting A- in chem lab in first year (he is a junior) 🙂

I’d say take Freshwater Ecology next time instead! 😛

I was hoping someone would reference that here, THANK YOU
