Hey Guys...I'm really confused in which major to choose. I have heard that Bachelor in Human biology is really good and kind of like what we do in Med school but on the other hand Bachelor in Regular Biology prepares you for MCAT. Looking for some good advice in which one to major in or which one is better!

Thanks in Advance!

Not really. You can't memorize your way into a great MCAT score.

Nor do you have to major in something to get a benefit from the coursework. Pick a major that really interests you -- be it biology, human biology, or film production. This is the time to major in something just because "it seems cool" or "the classes are fun". Then just make sure you take the required science courses to apply to the schools you want. Yes, it's that simple. 🙂

It won't make a difference. Regular Bio has a lot more detail, much of which will not be found in the MCAT. I majored in Human Biology and did just fine on the bio portion of the MCAT (got a 14). You can pretty much major in anything and do great on the MCAT. However, I realized that if you want to do basic science research, regular Bio is much more useful. Good luck in choosing your major!

Don't major in any biology. Bio majors are not very useful in the job market, even more important is that they don't increase your chance for medical school.

Do yourself a favor and major in something that will be useful if you don't end up in medical school. Some type of business is probably your best bet. A business major (minus economics and accounting) will allow you to take your prereqs and study for the MCAT without much hassle along with having good job prospects.

True. Bio majors make very little money right out of college. But hey, major in what you love.

You should have a career in mind when picking a major. Pick a major for a career your would love doing, not because you would enjoy the classes. History is very interesting but not a useful degree.

It just depends on which you like more. I don't know what those majors entail at your school.

I'm a human biology major and I enjoyed most of the courses that I had to take. That being said though, biology majors at my school have more flexibility and freedom to pick and choose what they want to take. So if you didn't want to take physiology (which is a req for most human bio majors) then you can opt out of it. Human biology also has way too many cut throat pre-med's which was a downside. It made the classes that much more competitive.

Choose biology only if you truly enjoy the subject material. If you really do like it, then even a "useless" general bio or human bio degree can get you a job.

This is not very good advice considering most people work in field unrelated to their degree.

This isn't always necessarily true. I was offered a job working for a big pharma company making around ~60,000/year right after graduation, with lots of room for promotion (I'll graduate with a BS in biology). Decided to go with the >$250,000 in debt instead. 🙂

That is because most people choose majors that don't readily apply to a career.

Let me guess. It was a sales job and they approached you.
