What if you do family medicine and then try to get a job in canada? They recognize abfp and FP work ER in canada? And if you stick to FP, u still make more than american FP? One of the advantages is that even if I could match ER, I'd be more likely to match california or florida if I did FM... But does Canada really hire american FP, or not? Also, I ask this out of curiousity. I don't think FP or ER would be any good for me, at least because I might not feel comfortable around sick kids.

Well, at least the OP gets points for referring to "ER" and "FP". Of late, I see the folks saying "ER" and "FM" - like Family Practice is standing up a bit straighter. (In case you were wonder, although you weren't, It WAS the "American Board of Family Practice" until 2005, when the name was changed to "ABFM".)

I heard that if you worked as a Scandanavian anesthesiologist, then you can be recognized in ER since "its all the same anyways". Also, no idea how this was a "backdoor" into US EM.

If you want to practice a field of medicine, you should attempt to do residency in that field. If you don't think you can feasibly match into it, adjust your expectations and do choice #2 or #3.

Canadian EM via FM still has an associated fellowship after FM residency(one of the two ways of becoming an EP in Canada). I have no idea what reciprocity there is between graduates of this track and ABEM.
